You know what the best response to this nonsense is? A policy plan to make Canada more economically resilient/independent. The type of stuff the ndp has been fighting for for decades. Don't care which leader will fight Trump hardest. Want to hear how they will build Canada to be strong and free.
11/ Sure, being next to a global superpower like the U.S. has always been a challenge. But it wasn’t inevitable that we’d end up this weak. There was a time when protecting Canada’s interests and identity was at least part of the agenda.
10/ Instead, we got tax cuts for multinationals, more outsourcing, and trade deals that let foreign corporations call the shots. Now, Liberals and Conservatives are acting like they’re the ones who’ll fix it. Come on—they’re the ones who created this mess.
9/ The most frustrating part? Progressives have been warning about this for years. The NDP and social democrats have consistently pushed for policies to protect Canadian independence:
- Reinvesting in domestic manufacturing.
- Processing resources here at home.
- Strengthening internal markets.
8/ And when the U.S. turns hostile, like now with Trump threatening tariffs and economic bullying, we’re left scrambling. Why? Because we’ve made ourselves vulnerable. We’ve handed over the leverage, bit by bit, over decades.
7/ These governments told us it was about “efficiency” and “growth,” but what they really did was sell out Canada’s long-term interests for short-term gains. Now we’re completely dependent on the U.S. for our food, energy, technology—you name it.
6/ This didn’t happen by accident. For decades, both Liberal and Conservative governments:
Signed trade deals like NAFTA that gutted our local economy.
Slashed corporate taxes for multinationals.
Privatized public assets and essential services.
5/ Now, look at where we are. Our industries? We export raw materials instead of processing them here. Our food supply? Dominated by U.S.-owned brands like Kraft and Heinz. Infrastructure? Dependent on foreign technology and investment.
3/ But over the last few decades, that conversation has all but disappeared. Neoliberal policies—embraced by both Liberals and Conservatives—have hollowed us out. We’ve sold off or abandoned so much of what used to make us self-reliant.
2/ Even when we couldn’t match the U.S.’s scale, there was a real effort to build up Canadian industries, support local businesses, and maintain some level of independence. Politicians—at least on paper—pretended to care about protecting Canada.

I just think people are feeling tense and worried about the future and need to see how the NDP will make Ontario and Canada better able to deal with the nonsense coming from South of the border. This should be an easy win. Decades of neoliberal lib and con govs got us where we are today. Think big!
There's been a lot of talk of why Doug Ford is calling an early election. Here's my response:
Marit, above all else please go hard on showing Ontarians how the NDP policies would build a more resilient and dynamic province, rather than just focusing on how bad Ford is or how you're going to fight back against Trump. Ontarians desperately crave someone with a real vision who offers them hope.
We have to get out the vote
