Very attractive postdoc opportunity at the University of Padua. While the position is advertised as Econ, the group has strong interests in political economy and would consider seriously quant polisci students.

Amazing! Well deserved!
I am extremely honored, and equally perplexed, that my book has received the Stein Rokkan Prize.
Thank you so much to everyone who helped out with this project along the way. So much of the book is the result of feedback by kind people who took the time to listen and read. Thank you.

Picture of No Option But Sabotage
My bookβNo Option But Sabotage: The Radical Environmental Movement and the Climate Crisisβcomes out today!
It's the result of 3+ years of research and 150+ interviews with 100+ activists and experts.
Clearly, AI makes alot of the research process for these projects better and more efficient (I experience this already), but hard to see how it will replace the in-person component (e.g., collaborate with stakeholders, align policy and academic incentives)... But, maybe wishful thinking on my end :)
And demonstrated ability to execute substantively interesting complex projects that canβt be fully automated (eg field experiments, analysis of proprietary admin data)?

Today, the Government of Ontario announced changes to funding across the postsecondary sector, including a $6.4 billion investment.
This funding will help sustain access to high-quality academic programs & support students in preparing for the future. uoft.me/funding-announcement
Thanks, Chris! I can't wait to hear what you think :)
Yes! Plus this could have positive externalities, ultimately improving intergroup relations!

πClimate action is a polarized topic & increasing support for mitigation is very challenging!π
In a new WP w/ @saumjha.bsky.social, Kala, Shroff, Hanlon, we use an RCT to show that exposure to financial assets in the energy sector βοΈ support for climate action www.chagaiweiss.com/papers/inpro...
Working on this project was a lot of fun, and I learned a ton from my coauthors! As always, we welcome any and all comments and suggestions!!
Finally, we show that fx attenuate, but are still detectable 8months post-treatment initiation, and 6.5months after respondents are divested from their assets!
To substantiate our mechanism of learning, we show that exposure to financial markets:
πΈincreased (reduced) consumption of financial (partisan/polarized) news
πΈincreased financial confidence
πΈincreased objective/subjective knowledge regarding firms environmental impact
Importantly, we show that our intervention, which is a non-paternalistic approach to persuasion (!) doesn't preach to the choir! Fx are larger among those with more skeptical beliefs and preferences ex-ante!
We find that exposure to financial assets in the energy sector increases support for climate action midway through trading and after six wks of trading!
Fx r stronger for respondents initially endowed π’ assets, but π€ assets also increase support for climate action!
Notably, after 3 wks of trading we gave respondents the opportunity to trade across π’π€ asset types. As evident from our trading data, respondents diversify, but mostly stick to the asset type to which they were initially assigned.
Around the 2024 election we endowed +3.5K US voters w/ financial portfolios in either π’ or π€ energy valued at $50-$100. Over 6wks we encouraged them to hold/trade assets.
Using unrelated surveys we elicit climate beliefs, preferences & behaviors midway through trading and up to 8mnths post-trt
