A juvenile pileated woodpecker stands on an old woodpile next to a birch log that is growing mushrooms. The same size as his parents, you can see he's young by the fresh look on his face. I know it's a he because he has a red stripe behind his beak.

The same juvenile pileated woodpecker, but gone is the sleekness. He's scrunched down and puffed up, an oversized fledgling waiting for his mom on the woodpile.

Mom has arrived and is perched on the old birch log. She is passing food into her fledgling's mouth who is happily taking the offering.

I just had a most magical moment in my backyard. This fledgling pileated woodpecker decided to practice foraging in my old woodpile. He was doing quite well and looking very grown up until Mom came back to check on him. Then, he was back into full baby mode. Such an amazing experience. 🪶🌿

This teeny little Gray Catbird must have just emerged from the nest. No tail and not yet grown into its beak. Not to mention the CUTE!
