No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.
Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
And it shows some obvious ways in which TV shows can do harm - both to individuals, many of whom were hoping this would finally 'prove' they were smart, and to society, when the myths are upheld by this kind of lazy and thoughtless design.
It reveals some persistent myths about the idea of a ‘genius’ – that some people work lightning fast, are better alone, or have ‘innate’ skills, for example.
It's show week!

New video about maths communication!
What makes Numberphile videos so effective? I analyse how these videos explain maths, and try talking about the Monty Hall problem in the iconic Numberphile style myself. @bradyharan.bsky.social

I love how simple shapes like triangles, put together in the right way, can create beautiful, complex images. Just like simple notes, put together in the right way, can create beautiful, complex music.
I combined two of my favourite hobbies - making triangle animations and noodling with piano exercises.

The Little Event was my 1st #SciComm Event back in 2016 when I still wasn't quite sure if it was for me.
10 years & 10 BIG Events later and I've carved out a place for myself in SciComm - including now as Chair of @big-stem-network.bsky.social!
Where could #LittleEvent26 take you?

So which is growing faster – recordings of Summertime or number of triangle centres? How do they compare? Are they linked in some way? This is research that I may or may not be undertaking.
Image of a triangle inscribed in a circle, with constructions for three of its centres.
In the meantime, here’s a picture of just a few of those centres with their construction lines.
Hopefully, at some point in the not-too-distant future, I’ll be able to make a decent recording of the song with The Pseudorandom Ensemble [5], with hastily-updated figures where appropriate.
And the number is growing fast. A few years ago I wrote a song, How Many Centres, on this subject, and at that time the number was around 55,000.
Where am I going with this? Well, this staggering number reminded me of another staggering collection – the Encyclopedia of Triangle Centers [4], which as of today lists 71,178 triangle centres.
A Broadway World article from August 2020 [3] claims 98,400 public performances, 82,723 of which have been recorded. Make of that what you will.
However, to support the claim I heard on the radio, the Guinness World Record page goes on to say that ‘The Summertime Connection’, a group that no longer seem to have an online presence, claim that there are 67,591 recorded versions, as of 1 June 2017.
According to Guinness World Records [1], Summertime is the most covered track, as of 20 March 2018, with 214 covers. They got their data from WhoSampled [2], which is itself a fascinating site, although I can’t at a glance see where 214 came from.
I heard on the radio last week that there are in the region of 67,000 recordings of Gershwin’s song, Summertime. Of course I had to check this out.
Image shows a tiling made of copies of a single pentagon. The pentagon is narrow and pointy. The tiling is roughly circular, with a spiky edge, It has been coloured in 20 colours on a scale from red to purple, to highlight the spirals withing the tiling.
To brighten up your Sunday morning, a tiling with rotational symmetry of order 20 made of pentagons.

Bored over the festive season? We're still seeking contributions to our ridiculous saytheprime.com video project: sign up and make a 5-minute video of yourself saying a chunk of digits of the largest known prime number. Can we finish before they discover a bigger one? It's a race against maths!
Hana holding a fan of A6 zines called ‘nerdy drawing club, issue 1 - Xmas marks the spot’ with a tree made of triangles on the front.
An a6 zine titled ‘nerdy drawing club: issue 2, New Year’s Play’ with half a mandala drawn on the front and a pen on top of the zine

It is an acceptable risk that some people who don’t “deserve” it accidentally get help, if it means everyone who needs it is guaranteed to get help.
This is such a shameful decision by GirlGuiding. Quite literally disempowering from an organisation that promises to 'help all girls know they can do anything' and who work within nature - a space that already systemically excludes minorities.
This will hit a lot of kids hard.
A seating plan with very few available seats.
Still an epsilon number of seats left for tomorrow night's Big London Show which don't have the view blocked by a safety rail.
That said: I promise to move around the stage so much that no one rail can block me for long. lwtheatres.co.uk/whats-on/mat...
