The londondeadpubs guy has branched out to find Ireland's finest pub, swotting away its London competitors with a perfect 10-10-10 score. And it's not the Gravediggers.

Dear everyone,
As per the post from the Bodleian librarian below, AI bots and scrapers are putting just about every website under great pressure, British History Online included.
A lot of excellent tech staff are working hard to keep everything working, but outages and siruptions are inevitable.
I'm suing Grammarly over its paid AI feature that presented editing suggestions as if they came from me - and many other writers and journalists - without consent.
State law requires consent before someone's name can be used for commercial purposes.

Ai generated St Patrick's day banner with lots of tweeness and unbelievable surroundings around the main logo.
Saw this horror of AI in the Dun Laoghaire shopping Center today…. (zoom in around the arc of “letters” around the main greeting)
Yesterday we welcomed designer/lecturer Peter O’Brien, along with a group from #IADT for a special viewing in our Art Room. On display were a number of theatre-themed works, including costume sketches from Peter O’Brien’s Theatre Collection: https://catalogue.nli.ie/Collection/vtls000762878
Reminded of this Limmy quote about general public apathy towards the creative visual arts "no one noticing anything, no one caring about anything, everything pure shite"
This book is very old, but I still teach it because it's so relevant and it never fails to create generate epiphanies for students.
In 1983, Ruth Schwartz Cowan published a book called More Work for Mother where she argued that modern household tech (washing machines/vacuums) didn't reduce women's housework time, it just raised standards of domesticity. Household work is never shortened by tech & you can extrapolate that out.
if gender is so innate why does it need deputized citizens to meticulously enforce it?
“A.I. chatbots contain the sum of all human knowledge” is so egregiously wrong that I don’t know what to say.
Chatbots have been trained on corpus of digital(ised) text - ABSOLUTELY NOT the sum of all human knowledge. Paper, experience, embodiment, oral tales all missing.
These people are fools!

This FOl enquiry for the Guardian has taken up a great deal of my life for the past 2 years. (1/3)
move slow and repair things
in the store just now and there was a couple looking at those prepped toddler meals and he was saying “everything’s better if you just cook from scratch” and she goes “they don’t look bad and they’d save me so much time” and he just kept repeating “it’s better if you cook”
I did not commit a crime
Cueing meme: you fucked up a perfectly good computer is what you did. look at it. it’s got anxiety.
(Not that I believe the spoofers, it’s just too good a set-up to pass by…)
“May or may not have gained consciousness”. I have good news, I can tell you decisively which it is, you massive spoofer

A brown penguin chick of some kind. It looks very much like a man in a suit. It is bedraggled and miserable
Made it to Friday but at what cost
A section of a much larger painting (Joshua Reynolds’ Parody of the School of Athens), showing a middle aged man in 18th century brown coat, breeches and a brown wig sitting on a step with his knees sticking up. He is gesturing at something out of shot (I think it’s a drawing) and an older man in robes and a white wig beside him is leaning down to point at it as well.
I used to work in the Casino and I think there’s at least one article on him by an ex-guide-art historian. Will see if I can dig it out. I was also told that this is him in the Parody of the School of Athens ⬇️
64/365 of an edit a day on @wikipedia.org
Having written this article, I'm quite surprised it hadn't been written before - he worked on many of the most notable Georgian buildings in Dublin and the surrounding counties. Better late than never, here he is:

It does make me wonder where the parts and materials for solar panels come from though. It’s one thing if you already have them installed, but supply chains can be fragile things.
And all other green energy platforms!

If you ever want to read a paper for free and can't find it otherwise, email the lead author and politely ask for a copy. You will not be bothering the person. You will in fact make their whole entire day. I have had scientists get so excited I asked they sent me everything they ever published.
Timeline cleanser: the last piece of Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia’s main tower has been winched into place
Calling AI "slop" has been one of the most effective instances of the public rebranding a product and it pisses them off.
I got stuck in one of those sodding chatbots today, trying different permutations on ‘I want to talk to a human’, none of which it understood 🤦🏻♀️🤯
This gives History Reclaimed a new meaning. But seriously, this is ghastly...
If you teach please show your students this. If you're a student, please read this.
The answers LLMs generate are not all alike. They are more likely to hallucinate on topics we don't already know a lot about. Even answers with "sources" shouldn't be trusted.
