Biotech investor set to lead US National Science Foundation If confirmed by the US Senate, Jim O'Neill would be the first non-scientist or engineer to lead the agency, a big funder of US basic research.

O'Neill, an investor in anti-aging technology who worked on HHS policy, would be the first non-scientist or engineer to lead NSF. His background will be a 'major concern' to the science and technology community, former NSF director Neal Lane told me.

Public pressure and threat of impeachment helped get Noem out. This is why we are pushing for impeachment of RFK, because that kind of pressure works.

Tragically, Kristi Noem’s planned farewell parade cost over $100,000, so no one could approve what she considered a modest parade.

Good article, but the framing is wrong. There is not a dearth of interest in taxonomy. There is a scarcity of funding and positions, which is a deliberate choice by funding agencies and institutions. The youth love taxonomy! It's the olds that are failing to meet their passion!

Some exciting life news... I am now a lecturer in Entomology and Ecology at Lincoln University in NZ!

We took the Entomology students on a fieldtrip over the weekend, and saw some of my favourite invertebrates: Velvet worms and giant springtails! Always a treat to see these!

Trump's actions this morning were unconstitutional and bear enormous consequences at home and abroad.
The stakes of speaking out against this administration are higher and more urgent today than they were yesterday, which is exactly why we are taking to the streets on March 7th. We will keep you up-to-date on where things are transpiring with how we may be incorporating this into our planned actions, and we look forward to seeing you out on the 7th. We hope you join us to make our voices heard.
Save science, protect health, and defend democracy,
Colette

This is so spectacularly spot on by @naomioreskes.bsky.social

Federal funding provides RELIABLE STABILITY void of the WHIMS of philanthropy and billionaires.

That stability + freedom to explore = innovation and discovery at scale.

$250B in R&D every year isn’t going to happen by Big Phil.

White House stalls release of approved US science budgets The US Congress rejected sweeping cuts to science agencies. But the NIH, the NSF and NASA have had their spending slowed.
