Dreaming of a world where humans do things that make sense and advance beauty (and health and wellness) over fear.
Universal basic income would have a net cost lower than the military budget. We could choose to save trillions of dollars in resources and time that go to treating the downstream effects of poverty and the omnipresent fear of it. A rational civilization would do that. Junot DΓaz in the linked paywalled essay on substack proposes countering sadopopulism by reconnecting with history and art to break free from the "eternal imprisoning ouroboros" of pain and suffering.
Ouroboros is this symbol that represents a circular pattern that traps societies in cycles of suffering that benefit those in power while preventing true solidarity and collective action.
Sadopopulism is a word that Tim Snyder (timothysnyder.org) coined in 2017. It's a political strategy where leaders don't offer real benefits but instead offer spectacles of others suffering more, allowing supporters to feel better about their own situation through comparison.
#Sadopopulism and #Ouroboros. Do you know these words? Do you know these concepts?
