The outer surface of the robe is mapped in 2D space, though including the sleeves can be tricky. I assign locations by putting pixel numbers in cells in a spreadsheet, and can also control mirroring and tiling of effects.
I use custom hardware and software. All pixel mapping and effects are handled within my controller, I use DMX to select pre-set modes or send parameters to modify them

I make light up clothing for all kinds of rock stars, including engineers! I had the pleasure of attending a 50th anniversary celebration for Computers and Structures, Inc. (CSI) hosted by founder Ashraf Habibullah who has worn many custom Enlighted jackets over the years.

The lights are divided into 16 zones, with up to 250 pixels in each, no power injection needed (all strings have 2.5cm pixel spacing)

I used pebble-type neopixel strands, which are available from adafruit (though I buy elsewhere in larger qty)
I made a few pieces of lighted clothing for Boop! The Musical, now showing on Broadway. This robe and jacket (with nearly 4000 RGB LED pixels!) are used to illustrate a magical transition from Betty Boop's black and white cartoon world to the full color real world.
This was such a massively great and fascinating interview with @flashingjanet.bsky.social - it was awesome to hear about the multitude of technical challenges involved in making high profile wearable LED costumery and to hear about what she had to do 20 yrs ago before WS2812s were invented. 🤯
