ALWAYS! One routine ride I hit slick pavement wet from a sprinkler and went flying. Cracked my helmet. Shudder to think of what could have happened.

My point exactly. Reporting is undervalued today while “building your brand” online, usually through opinion, is the way to get ahead.

Plus: beat reporting requires you to be responsible for what you’ve written —you’ll see those folks again. Too much modern journalism is explainer/pundit based and you’re rarely held to account for your opinions.

Hmmm. I think it’s the other way around. People decided “I like strawberries, and I want them all year round”. Growers and markets accommodated. I once had an online scuffle with a noted NY food writer who opined that California strawberries were shit. I pointed out she was buying them in February.

On the importance of doubting your certainty. Love that the @irishtimes.com regularly runs columns on philosophy. And this one is much needed (of that I’m fairly certain).

Punch the monkey an alternative ending to his story if he was in this part of the world. 15 mins in he has at least 1 Irish Granny, then the pub, heritage studies, splashing the Atlantic and gettin' foundered. Making soda bread....

Hang on, why has this not happened to all us solitary crathurs as well?

Ghislaine Maxwell, a convicted child sex trafficker, gets gardening time, sports, therapy dogs, and spa products in prison.

Migrant children in custody are sleeping on concrete floors without enough food or clean water.

Our priorities are so fucked.

Timeline cleanse. Breathe deep and turn up the sound. After the second-rainiest winter in Irish history, we finally got a wee break.

‘Absolute hell’: Irishman with valid US work permit held by Ice since September Seamus Culleton has been in a detention facility in Texas for nearly five months despite having no criminal record

This is absolutely insane. The sort of Kafka-esque nightmare you would find in a Philip K Dick book set far in the dystopian future. A window on America tumbling into autocracy.

Just because we aren't totally surprised, doesn't mean we can shrug it off. Decency, dignity, and humanity matter, even now. Especially now.

Thinking of Washington Post colleagues today.
I've been through journalism mass layoffs & it is so disheartening when you give your all to this work only to realise that those in charge don't recognise its value.
The public also needs to remember that good journalism can't happen without support.

Yes! I was lucky enough to live in West Texas at a time when there was a thriving “amateur” music scene (amateur in the sense that no one made much money or certainly had record deals). Such great spirit of community and creativity. Joe Ely, Jimmie Gilmore, Butch Hancock, Lucinda Williams.

Whatever is in the Epstein Files is so explosive that the leaders of the Department of Justice are openly breaking the law every day to keep us from seeing it. (Just a reminder amongst all the other stuff flying around.)

A day will come when Donald Trump no longer dominates our politics.

Even though this is obvious, it’s hard to keep in mind.

The future will belong to those who can think clearly about what happens next.

Well told. I started reluctantly, then became fond of the constant surprising mix of commentary and comedy, then finally fled a year ago when my feed degenerated into street fights, Ukrainian war footage and light porn. Like being trapped in the mind of a 14-year-old.
