It is just now occurring to me that Brooks and his allegedfriend left and went to eat *Mexican* where they no doubt encountered only familiar terms. Probably this was widely commented on at the time.
*Equally probable that it was some young thing he was trying to hook up with as his wife was aging out of marriageable status.
Alternative explanation: he had the same experience as David Brooks's probably fictional* friend and just couldn't figure out how to order a coffee regular.
