This is correct; what I wanted to imply within the character limit (but clearly failed at) was the aforementioned "anti-AI" part of a "policy."

The same blog on responsible LLM use also mentions opposing "low-effort, unreviewed AI slop," but that still leads directly into post 2 & 3 of this thread.

I've been grinding #Bloodstained RotN as my 1st official Metroidvania for ~the last 10 days.

Last night I played it for so long, I didn't stop until today at *noon*.

... All the while, I had no idea that Shūtarō Īda had passed away on Feb. 10th, until seeing tonight's news.

(In case tone wasn't clear: As much as we hate it, LLMs are everywhere, incl. whatever you read this on; browsers, phones, OSes, even Linux. No one is clean if the debate comes down to it as a broad, non-specific "deal-breaker." - We're begrudgingly forced to use other criteria to weigh options.)

In short, based on those statements, anyone deeming LLM use as a deal-breaker will probably want nothing to do with both Fluxer AND Stoat, since people justifiably have trust issues.

... Except Bluesky itself uses LLMs, which some might say paints those pointing fingers in a rueful light.

Stoat & Fluxer seem to be the 2 Discord alternatives people are plugging here, but I see people "no u"-ing between both:

Stoat had (& has removed) LLM commits, and apparently has an anti-AI policy.

Fluxer has no policy, uses MaxMind for their GeoIP, and the dev has a blog about acceptable LLM use.

So yeah. Regardless of what happens with this BS Discord is trying to pull, this moment in time where there's all this discourse around abandoning it?

SOLID TIME to remind folks:

Using Discord servers as data repositories is (and has always been) an atrocious idea, critically lacking in foresight.

Now expand that concept to every hobby.

And then FORGET hobbies, special interests, and video games for a moment... Instead, consider this:

People have been using Discord servers as places to "host" their photos. Videos. Audio. Art. Memories.

And they haven't backed that stuff up anywhere else.

"I have it in my personal notes"
"I have it on another server"
"I'll post it on the wiki someday"
"Just search [@username] in [#textchannel] for now, you'll find it"

It is not preserved. It is not publicly backed up. It can be deleted with one click, and you may never find those people again.

What's even worse is, it is an INDISPUTABLE fact that these communities passively (and some, purposely) gatekeep information about these games by only keeping records of it in their Discord chats.

It may not be done consciously... But effectively, the end result is gatekept information.

At any time, an entire server can be deleted forever. We've seen it before: An Admin or a Mod gets compromised or goes rogue, and it's done.

Suddenly, nowhere on the Internet can any of that "documented" information be found & shared... Because it wasn't preserved. All the eggs were in one basket.

Retro game, modern game, and speedrun communities.

Pretty much all of them have Discord servers where helpful information for every aspect of those games is "documented," and can be searched through like a timeline. Great.

Except many groups now EXCLUSIVELY place this info in Discord servers.

Now seems like a fantastic opportunity to remind folks in hobbyist + special interest communities:

Using #Discord servers as data repositories is (and has always been) an incredibly abysmal idea when it comes to preservation of information.

Don't quite know what I mean by that? I'll go into it:

It could be really bad for Discord if Californians contact the office of the Attorney General to report the potential violations of CCPA and CALOPPA citing the recent breach from a few months back where 1.5tb of user data and millions of IDs were leaked, but who can say for sure?

It's almost as if those at #Discord forgot

things like Skype, Curse Voice, + whatever the fuck Google tried to make popular in 2015.
