"If we are seeing that sort of outward extreme violence in broad daylight in the streets of Minneapolis & streets across the country, imagine what people must be facing behind closed doors and behind bars in ICE detention centers,” said Setareh, advocacy director at DWN to @truthout.org.

We have and will continue to resist criminalization as a real solution to social and economic problems.
Federal immigration law is lagging behind drug policy reforms.
The 1996 Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act (AEDPA) laid the groundwork for mass deportations.
The 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRIRA) locked in crimmigration as national policy.
With 'double punishment,' immigrants serve time and are then detained or deported.
Our growing awareness of crimmigration – the intentional link between the criminal legal and immigration systems – is key to continuing to building social justice movements that leave no one behind.
The rise in the criminalization of immigrants follows the playbook of criminalization used against Black communities in the war on drugs.
📌 Our communities are not threats. We can undo criminalization and build a culture of care rooted and collective safety.
