Pix of the day. Saturday, March 7th More bollards are going in by the Roman Baths. Could Stall Street be renamed Fence Street? The horrible fencing by the Roman Baths shop remains. It doesn't make a good impression for our tourists, and outside one of the city's main attractions. The little collonaded entrance to Abbey Church Yard is also partially fenced. A bit of much-needed maintenance to its plastered ceiling? Do you know, I am sure it would be superb public relations if notices were displayed at these sites explaining to the public (and ratepayers) exactly what is going on.

City centre cycling Work starts next week on a new walking, wheeling and cycling scheme in the centre of Bath. The new route, which will connect to existing and proposed routes across the city, will begin on Charles Street before continuing through the city centre via Upper Borough Walls to Pulteney Bridge.  The scheme involves the construction of 300 meters of new cycle paths, eight new crossings and improving 800 metres of pavements, roads and drainage. Works start on Upper Borough Walls on Monday 9 March, and works across the whole route are expected to finish by the end of 2026.

The X they are a changing It was never my favourite subject at school, but then again, we didn't have the benefit of modern technology. Oh, those times x tables still give me nightmares! So for the youngsters of today, it's good to know that a locally-based hi-tech company is there to help with the subject. Pageticker is a digital reading diary and the brainchild of Bath‑based teachers‑turned‑founders Tom Minor and Nicola Chilman, who previously built the successful maths app DoodleMaths. Combining their passions for reading and maths, they have created a curated booklist to celebrate World Maths Day on Wednesday, 26 March 2026.

Getting the bus habit Figures from First Bus show which areas across the West of England saw the largest increases in children and young people getting the bus last summer, compared to the year before. Many places saw the number of kids’ journeys more than double during the summer, year-on-year.  The nationally unique Kids Go Free offer, which, by design, required no registration or bus pass to maximise uptake, succeeded across the West, with a disproportionately high uplift in lower-income communities. The statistics show that the number of under-16s travelling by bus from those areas last summer – where some families often cannot afford to travel, preventing them from accessing free cultural experiences on offer in the West’s villages, towns, and cities – essentially doubled compared to the previous year.

Hello world! Cousins Frankie, Connie and Maddox were all born within the space of a single day at Bath's Royal United Hospital. The rare coincidence took place on Friday, 6 February, when Georgie from Bridgeyate, South Gloucestershire, gave birth to identical twin girls Frankie and Connie and her brother Billy and his partner Kiera welcomed their son Maddox shortly after. Georgie said, “It still feels surreal that we all became parents on the very same day. We joked about it happening, and then it actually did! “It was a very emotional day for us all, one our family will never forget.

It will be an evening of poetry and song with performers including, amongst others, singer Pete Josef, award-winning author Max Porter, and playwright Peter Oswald. The pilgrimage itself is a 16-day cross-border walk to promote unity between communities, to stand firmly against racism, Islamophobia, anti-semitism and all forms of hate.

Here we go Doesn't take long, does it? Only weeks after M & S moved into Southgate, those who seek to deface our city are quick to get to work on the exterior of the old store. I have always regarded 'tagging' as the human equivalent of a dog leaving its watery scent on physical objects along its way. It certainly doesn't qualify as street art. Meanwhile, while we speculate as to who might move into the old store, what about considering flats installed above the ground floor, divided up for smaller businesses? Or maybe it would make a good city-centre Travelodge?

Wheels in motion The WECA Mayor's office has emailed a lengthy and positive release promoting the fact that over £70 million is currently being invested in walking, cycling, and wheeling improvements across the West.  Together, the work will see over 47 miles of new and improved cycle routes, and almost as many new and improved pedestrian paths, as shown on a new interactive map, as well as 10 new school streets. Well, before I continue with the release, let me say I welcome more cycle routes if they have a good road surface beneath them.

Taste of Palestine Thanks to Dave Hawkins for pointing out that Bath appears to be getting a Palestinian 'restaurant' - opposite the Green Rocket Cafe at the city end of Pierrepoint Street. I looked online, Dave. Zaytoun is the Arabic word for olive, and I think this new store will be selling lots of those, both as oil and whole. The company's website says 'Zaytoun is a social enterprise founded in 2004 to support the resilience of Palestinian communities through fair trade. 100% of our profits are reinvested into furthering our mission…

Pix of the day. Wednesday, March 4th It's a romantic shot - taken against the sun - but l need a second go to show you construction progress on the old gasworks site. Taken from the cycle path that follows the river down to Twerton and beyond. Cranes are a good sign of commercial activity, but as Ralph Oswick has also shown with his Riverside pictures - they also come in handy when you have to do work on the roof of luxury penthouses! I love the fact that once materials have been transferred to the heights, it's fold-up and go!

That fencing …… It's true that I go on about the mess outside the entrance to the Roman Bath's shop, but it's not the most attractive sight for locals and our visitors to come upon. I know it has something to do with the vault-strengthening work that has been going on under this spot and down Bath Street, but for how much longer will the fencing stay? I am hoping to have a clearer picture later in the week, but for now, this is as good as it gets in terms of local authority comment.
