One of the negatives to becoming a writer is that I am now hypersensitive to grammar errors and poor sentence structure. It's a constant distraction when I'm reading. And don't get me started on obvious plot holes in highly regarded books.

It was the sight of Nillas, standing in front of the room’s only door, that calmed Emmaline. His determined look was almost comical as he clutched the hilt of his knife tightly. Nillas was no warrior, but she appreciated the gesture.

Emmaline sighed. “The staff accepted me as its new owner. It told me it’s looking forward to helping me wreak death and destruction. And then it started detailing ways to do that at great length. I think it’s lonely.” The voice of the staff in her head sounded odd, like an out of tune chorus.
There is only one instance of "lonely" in my WIP at present.
