βœ¨πŸ™Œ AI that helps communities thrive on their own terms Open protocols + AI-enabled coding = building what we need for ourselves

Code may be easier now, but running infrastructure and building community are still hard.

I wrote for the @newpublic.org newsletter this week, exploring how atproto + llms could make a great pair to restore agency and empower communities in a sustainable way.

I'm one of the people who tried to plant the idea of a phone in Steve Jobs’s head but I have no idea if he even read my 2004 email suggesting Apple build a phone with an app store. I finished building a Symbian app store for the company that invented WAP and was frustrated by the UX of those phones.

The "Green New Deal" was undermined by the scope and cost of the proposal despite the policies and goals being popular. In hindsight would you do anything differently to address concerns that the government is no longer able to do big things without taking a lot more time and money than we are told?

A VC and some big-name programmers are trying to solve open source's funding problem, permanently | TechCrunch A group of well-known open source programmers and a VC have launched the Open Source Endowment. They hope this new method will provide funding for good.

We just launched the Open Source Endowment, the first endowment dedicated to supporting Open Source maintainers, with $693,000 raised already.

The world depends on Open Source, but making our ecosystem sustainable is a complex task. I hope that, with community consultation, the Endowment can help πŸ™

I do think there is a case to be made for tech executives and high level managers being replaced by AI agents or becoming AI administrators. They should be all knowing so they can make the best decisions. I tend to think an AI could do better with minimal oversight (safety nets for hallucinations).

I'm not sold on AI taking over all aspects of software development but there are certainly parts that should be automated and/or augmented by AI. I think developers should be using AI tools but avoiding becoming a tool of AIs.

Top engineers at Anthropic, OpenAI say AI now writes 100% of their codeβ€”with big implications for the future of software development jobs | Fortune AI coding tools are getting more sophisticated. But if coders stop coding, what happens to software development jobs?

I’m more curious about what percent of their code is reviewed by humans since that is the systemic risk.

While Claude Code is impressive tech, I’ve seen it make incredible mistakes almost every other day on basic tasks. I can’t imagine the bugs lurking if you trust it completely.
