πŸ“ˆClimate change-driven summer heat led to an additional 16,500 deaths in 854 European cities, a new study led by the Grantham Institute and the @lshtm.bsky.social estimates 🧡

Watch Dr @clairbarnes.bsky.social from @ic-cep.bsky.social & @gkonstantinoudis.bsky.social explain the findings.

Scores of Climate Experts Condemn Trump Climate Report as β€˜Junk Science’ A 435-page review found the authors used standard climate denier tropes to produce a report riddled with errors.

Important, rear-guard work. Thanks to these scientists.

Anti-Offshore Wind Network | CDL

These were two policy briefings and a peer-reviewed article produced by undergraduates under my supervision in 2023 and 2024. The letter demands that Brown take the work off its websites. Here's the work:

Law Firm Pressures Brown University to Erase Research on Anti-Wind Groups

My lab's been attacked by an anti-wind group and their lawyers. They threatened the science funding of my whole university, to shut me and my undergraduate research assistants up.

And now: A thread regarding my thoughts on "1.5Β°C"--not only as a Paris Agreement target, but also re: relevance to recent #climate events & overlaps (or not) w/geophysical realities. (This was originally written as a response to a journalist, who used excerpts in their article.)

Indicators of Global Climate Change 2024: annual update of key indicators of the state of the climate system and human influence Abstract. In a rapidly changing climate, evidence-based decision-making benefits from up-to-date and timely information. Here we compile monitoring datasets (published at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15639576; Smith et al., 2025a) to produce updated estimates for key indicators of the state of the climate system: net emissions of greenhouse gases and short-lived climate forcers, greenhouse gas concentrations, radiative forcing, the Earth's energy imbalance, surface temperature changes, warming attributed to human activities, the remaining carbon budget, and estimates of global temperature extremes. This year, we additionally include indicators for sea-level rise and land precipitation change. We follow methods as closely as possible to those used in the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) Working Group One report. The indicators show that human activities are increasing the Earth's energy imbalance and driving faster sea-level rise compared to the AR6 assessment. For the 2015–2024 decade average, observed warming relative to 1850–1900 was 1.24 [1.11 to 1.35] °C, of which 1.22 [1.0 to 1.5] °C was human-induced. The 2024-observed best estimate of global surface temperature (1.52 °C) is well above the best estimate of human-caused warming (1.36 °C). However, the 2024 observed warming can still be regarded as a typical year, considering the human-induced warming level and the state of internal variability associated with the phase of El NiΓ±o and Atlantic variability. Human-induced warming has been increasing at a rate that is unprecedented in the instrumental record, reaching 0.27 [0.2–0.4] °C per decade over 2015–2024. This high rate of warming is caused by a combination of greenhouse gas emissions being at an all-time high of 53.6Β±5.2 Gt CO2e yrβˆ’1 over the last decade (2014–2023), as well as reductions in the strength of aerosol cooling. Despite this, there is evidence that the rate of increase in CO2 emissions over the last decade has slowed compared to the 2000s, and depending on societal choices, a continued series of these annual updates over the critical 2020s decade could track decreases or increases in the rate of the climatic changes presented here.

Our new paper updating key metrics in the IPCC is now out, and the news is grim:

⬆️ Human induced warming now at 1.36C
⬆️ Rate of warming now 0.27C / decade
⬆️ Sharp increase in Earth's energy imbalance
⬇️ Remaining 1.5C carbon budget only 130 GtCO2

It is shocking that 22 years after the US, UK and Australia went to war in Iraq based on the WMD lies, we see mainstream media headlines today running Trump's Iran "weeks away" from a nuclear weapon claim without explicitly framing it as directly contradicted by his own intelligence community

Building or Extracting Community Wealth? Shetland as a Test for a Just Energy Transition This briefing is adapted from the β€˜Shetland, community benefit and energy transition’ report

Shetland built significant community wealth from oil. Given this precedent, should the isles accept business-as-usual approaches for renewables?

This briefing dives into the ownership of renewables in Shetland, drawing on lessons from the isles as an early test case example for a just transition.

Working less is the most underrated climate solution Fewer work hours can lower emissions. So why isn’t the climate movement fighting for our collective right to relax?

Longer working hours have been linked to higher emissions, yet the climate movement seems reluctant to join the campaign for a four-day weekβ€”a potential strategic error given the social, health and climate benefits of working less.

My latest for Sower ⬇️πŸ§ͺ.

Lithium is the fuel of the future β€” and one of the biggest lithium deposits in all of Europe resides in Cornwall.

The β€œwhite gold rush” has already begun, but the public are set to pay for its development while private firms pocket the profits.

We can fix that. Here's how. 🧡
