Leaving this v. v. short thread with an iconic Glasgow landmark. What a day! So energising to be among culture change makers, and to recognise the collective effort we have for shaping the sector, the way in which government policy supports our work, and the hopes and dreams of our HE colleagues.

Busy busy day Doing. The. Work. but we're closing now with some reflections on the sector-wide challenges and opportunities for Research Culture change. Ben Bleasdale takes the floor first.
(IMO, he's going to have a tough act following Emily and Soo's talk, immediately before).

Energising day at the N8 Research Culture and Environment group away day in Durham today. Somehow managed to drag my arthritic body up all the hills, which paid dividends for a lovely meander to the station along the river on the way back. Watch this space for some emerging N8 RCE insights!!

We π loveπ toπ seeπ it!
As a Research Culture team, we've previously funded projects at Leeds that help support menopausal staff at the institution. But this new employment rights bill will help bring accountability to organisations across the UK!

Elsevierβs decision to close ResearchFish is big for the whole community. RF is hugely timeβconsuming, but building new systems wonβt be easy either. Still, understanding researchβs wider societal benefits matters - maybe it's time to rethink how we do it. A sectorβwide opportunity if we take it π

On this final full week before Christmas, and just in time for the end of #DisabilityHistoryMonth, why not read my interview with Armineh and Liz on how ableism presents itself in the HE sector, and how we've collectively and individually navigated it as disabled people.

We need to spend some time digesting all the many many documents that have now been released by the REF team (well done to the person pressing go live on those, and for living through the pressure of not accidentally pressing the button too early!). But safe to say that we will be sticking around!

But wording means a lot, and for many, removing the word "culture" from the assessment will mean removing the measurement of some of the less tangible but equally real aspects of the research environment that contribute to how research is produced, or not produced.

Our thoughts? A bit complicated, a bit mixed, but entirely what we were expecting given the rumour mill from the last few weeks. It's clear there is some attempt to embed research culture as business as usual, and we love π to π see π it π

It was also announced that Research Culture and its evidence/indicators will also be compulsory components in determining Research England QR funding allocation, so Research Culture is very much here to stay!

So what does this mean for research culture? Well, further panel discussions highlighted that the SPRE template will include indicators from the People, Culture and Environment pilot, with support on how to evidence these indicators. This means that many research culture metrics continue in SPRE.

Helen Cross, Director of Research and Innovation, Scottish Funding Council, and Vice Chair of the REF2029 Steering Group, also noted that the phrase "research culture" had got in the way of what this element was trying to evaluate. It is hoped that removing the phrase will get us back to its roots.

So why the name change? Does this mean Research Culture has disappeared? Not exactly. Lord Patrick Vallance of Balham made clear that SPRE will continue to measure how research environments are foundational to generating excellent research. He also noted that SPRE also reconfirms commitments to EDI.
