Every economist screams. Again.
Instead of subsidising consumption, to keep bills vaguely similar, subsidise reducing demand.
A huge missed opportunity the first time round when the government did nothing until it utterly had to, and was left with one lever... helicopter money.

Thanks to everyone who came to the London launch party for The Good Building Book. Really touched by the turnout on a wet evening. This time we had books which all sold! Great spending a couple of days with my fellow author Jon Broome and wemanaged to record a podcast with @benadamsmith.bsky.social

UK must stockpile food in readiness for climate shocks or war, expert warns
Prof Tim Lang says country produces far less food than it needs to feed population and is particularly vulnerable
The UK relies heavily on imports of food. Recent events have shown, in an increasingly volatile world, you can't always count on ships being able to move about.
Some countries are stockpiling food to prepare for climate shocks, the UK should too, says Prof Lang:

Humanity heating planet faster than ever before, study finds
Researchers identify sharp rise to about 0.35C every decade, after excluding natural fluctuations such as El Niño
It doesn’t matter whether the rate of global warming is increasing. It’ll never cease to amaze me that people don’t care that it’s happening at all. It should be the most alarming thing ever.

Price of Crude Oil WTI (USD/Bbl) over a five-year period, spanning from 2021 to early 2026. The chart shows a significant price peak in 2022 reaching over $120, followed by a general downward trend with various fluctuations, eventually hitting a low near $55 in late 2025 before a sharp vertical spike to the current price of 90.900. This recent surge represents an increase of +23.880 (+35.63%), highlighted in green text above the blue line graph.
The real insanity isn’t how much oil prices have spiked, it’s that we’re still burning oil for energy.

Pace of global warming has nearly doubled since 2015, reveals study - Carbon Brief
An acceleration in human-caused global warming could see the Paris Agreement’s 1.5C limit breached before...
I'm not suggesting this is an open secret within the climate science community, but it's remarkable how little impact this sort of research is generating. Because if the rate of warming really has *doubled* then you can kiss goodbye to 2°C. www.carbonbrief.org/pace-of-glob...

Four years and $880m later, what did the Resilient Homes Program achieve?
Communities say being the "guinea pig" of a flagship disaster recovery program has taken a toll.
...the process had delivered lessons in how best to manage retreat from the flood plains, but raised questions about what to do with the people and the land left behind.

RIP to Jesse Jackson. His funeral is today. I wanted to share this clip from his appearance on Sesame Street in 1971. His important words ring just as true today as they did back then.

I find it likely that future wars will not only be fought over earth’s resources but over earth itself - between those who desperately want to stabilise and heal various earth systems, and those who insist on destroying them.

‘A space of their own’: how cancer centres designed by top architects can offer hope
Exhibition at the V&A Dundee celebrates Maggie’s Centres created by Zaha Hadid, Richard Rogers, Norman Foster and others
“Even when facing a life-threatening illness or thinking we might die, in the moment we still need hope. Even if it’s a distraction, if your eye is taken by a plant in the garden or a piece of art you’re not sure you like, life still has value in that moment.”

📢 If we are sacrificing a working harbour to build this shiny new precinct, we cannot sacrifice working Sydneysiders too.

Big EU lobby groups exaggerated industry support for attack on carbon price
A letter to EU leaders was issued ‘on behalf of’ 1,300 signatories. Some firms deny they supported the demands.
An influential industry petition criticizing the European Union’s core climate policy implied its demands were supported by some 1,350 companies and associations.
Now some firms deny they signed up.
