If we survive this, I really hope parents take a long look at how they are teaching empathy to their children. It's so obvious that that is the missing ingredient in huge chunks of the population, amplified by social media algorithms and cultural rewards for reactions rather than thoughtfulness.

My students always sweetly ask this about every break, and the answer I swallow is "actually I'm finally hoping to get some work done."

Sea Levels Are Already Higher Than Many Scientists Think, New Study Shows Researchers found that a majority of studies on coastal sea levels underestimated how high water levels are, and hundreds of millions of people are closer to peril than previously thought.

Breaking News: Scientists have been using methods that underestimated how high sea levels already are, a new study found. One result is that hundreds of millions more people are already living dangerously close to the rising ocean than Western scientists had previously estimated.

Prof. Robert Pape:

"I have studied every air campaign since WWI... I've modelled the bombing of Fordow and regime change in Iran for 20 years... We are now in the grip of the escalation trap... This has never worked in over 100 years... Trump is up against the weight of history".

What It Will Take to Change the Regime in Iran The U.S. military must go big—and then let Iranians do the rest.

The Islamic Republic “is simply too ideological to be cowed by a few rounds of bombing,” writes Behnam Ben Taleblu. “A quick, one-and-done operation is extremely unlikely to down this regime.”

In Iran, air power alone will not reshape the regime. Since WWI, dozens of U.S., Israeli & allied air campaigns have tried to force political change — none installed friendly governments. None! They strengthen nationalism and intensify resistance.

Watergate is an overused benchmark, but it's the one most Americans are familiar with.

That scandal involved a president trying to cover up a crime that was basically breaking and entering by his subordinates, a misdemeanor in most places.

This one, meanwhile ...

Yes, but it also puts a lot of value back on in-person education. Online degrees are going to degrade in value when it's just AIs talking to each other.

There are problems with a geoengineering techno-fix for the climate crisis | Mike Hulme Geoengineering does little to defuse most of the risks that really matter for people – and it runs the risk of making some harms worse

Injecting particulates into the atmosphere isn’t a magical fix for the climate crisis, says Prof Mike Hulme

Less Foreign Aid, More Climate Risk The massive costs of gutting USAID.

“Washington’s retreat from international climate-resilience efforts is a false economy,” argue @alice-c-hill.bsky.social and Lindsey Doyle. “Any initial savings could quickly be erased as disasters worsened by climate change drive price increases.”

Utterly unacceptable in a democracy. In a sane world, House Republicans would be drafting impeachment articles today and Senate Republicans would be preparing for a trial to convict and remove him from office

My book, "Rising Temperatures, Rising Tensions:
Climate Change and Great Power Conflict" (Summer 2026, Lynne Rienner) explores how climate change alters state power and motivations and what realist theories must do to adapt to explain great power conflict in the Anthropocene.
