I recently enjoyed a several-months long personal passive-aggressive campaign of reporting-as-suspicious some internal weekly 'teams across the organization!' type newsletter because it couldn't have looked more like phishing if they'd tried. Fake urgency, hilariously mungled link shorteners, etc.

Perversely Stupid (cont'd.) (Continued, sort of, from here.) Here is a measurement, a quantification, demonstrating the reality of what we've been discussing as a willful,

I also love what's basically a companion essay piece to it, about how bad faith habits essentially strips the cognitive gears. "Constantly arguing in bad faith leads to thinking in bad faith and to living in bad faith, until bad faith is all youโ€™ve got left"

can't even really blame the guy for landing on the big idea being strapping rocket engines to a city and then smashing the city back into the ground. Mind Stone aside, his model's training weights were all sorts of fucked up since Stark was in charge of them

The thing about all these freak AI execs constantly going "our machine may have gained sentience?!" is that they want slaves. That they are ok with slave labor.

And *then* it always, always turns out their latest AI trick actually used slave labor somewhere in the global south.

They're slavers.

Yesterday, I gave colleagues from another university a brief tour of campus which included showing them the piece of chalkboard where Ernest O. Lawrence's Nobel Prize was announced to the group and confirmed. It just so happened that this was also in the 5min period before an undergrad lab started.

I don't know, squirrels have a lot of sense. You won't find a squirrel insisting that all squirrels who, like sadly reactive luddites, insist on obsolete modes of doing things like storing nuts to get through the winter will be left behind in the new nut paradigm.

Empathy And Epistemic Closure The wonkier blogs of the left and right have been discussing what they're calling "epistemic closure" among American

One of my perennial favorites. Pullquotes from it keep being longer than bluesky allows, but "empathy...is epistemic...a way of knowing" is the core riff to the guitar solo.

Very tangential, but learning the actual facts of the McDonalds coffee case versus the absolute mythological 'truth' it immediately took on in the minds of huge piles of people who I realized would rather die than let go of it...in retrospect it helped soften the blows of later current events.

often think about how the people who are least responsible for the current state of affairs seem to feel the most bad, to the point of complete paralysis. and the people who are the most responsible are seemingly not capable of feeling bad about anything they do, ever. an unfortunate problem.

Excuse me.

Oh, God. Oh, no. Holy shit. Get away from me.

I was wondering if you knew where the bathrooms are.

Look, I'm ... it's not a crime to scroll through your high school girlfriend's Instagram account. We remained friends after high school! I was at her wedding! It's only natural to see how she's doing.

I'm in a bit of a hurry, and I'm afraid that if I choose the wrong corridor, I'll be late for my train.

I think they're down that way, but I'm actually from out of town. Please stop talking to me.

Real quick, though. I agree that it's natural to be interested in an old friend, but aren't you afraid about the message you might be sending by liking a picture of her at the beach from 2015?

If that did happen, and I'm only going off your word, it was probably an accident. They put the ... scroll bars or whatever ... close to the thumbs up button. People have been complaining about that for years. I've been complaining about that for years.
