I was lucky enough to get an audiobook from NetGalley of Spider, Spider by @lcwinter.bsky.social. Here’s my short review (where I try not to give anything away, whilst trying to also tell everyone to read it because it’s fabulous!!):

Two estranged sisters are thrown together after the death of their father. Mickey, 33, an alcoholic Kindergarten teacher, hasn’t seen her father for 26 years, and is left his substantial estate – but there are conditions. Arlo (short for Charlotte) is her half-sister and a psychologist, and the sisters have never met. They’re both in for some surprises in the weeks ahead, that’s for sure. This is one of those books where you catch yourself letting out a (rather unladylike) snort of laughter, and then double-checking yourself: because should you really be laughing at what you’ve just laughed at? Well, life is based on ridiculous things, isn’t it? If you didn’t laugh, you’d probably cry or go mad! I really enjoyed this, Arlo and Mickey were really interesting characters who developed and grew up over the course of the novel.#bookstagram #booklove #bibliophile #instareads #bookworm

Favourite Daughter by Morgan Dick - my thoughts are over on instagram (I liked it, it was darkly funny and a bit sad in places):

Howes LtdPublished: April 2025Narrator: Elizabeth Bower4⭐️fictionDon’t Make Me laugh is a slow burn with a most satisfying ending, narrated really well by Elizabeth Bower. I could imagine her as Ali. We’ve heard a lot of talk recently of unnamed predators on the comedy circuit, and this is the story of one such man. Ali thinks she has found the right man to co-present a radio show: comedian Ed. He’s funny, he’s nice - and actually he’s none of these things. He’s not at all what he seems to be, in fact. Ali’s experience seemed all to plausible, and I very much enjoyed the way that she and the organisation called Scolds Bridle outed Ed’s behaviour. It was well worth the wait. I did wonder who Ed could be modelled on…#bookstagram #booklove #bibliophile #instareads #bookworm

A rather timely book about a radio presenter and a comedian with more than a nod to the MeToo movement. My short review:

clares_little_book_obsession on Instagram: "Medea by Rosie HewlettPublisher: BantamPublished: March 20244⭐️historical fiction/ greek mythology/ fantasy fiction/ retellingsWe’v…" Medea by Rosie HewlettPublisher: BantamPublished: March 20244⭐️historical fiction/ greek mythology/ fantasy fiction/ retellingsWe’ve all heard the story of Medea, and Rosie Hewlett has decided to tackle it from a different angle. History and stories of the time, written by men, aren’t particularly kind to women - especially when the woman in question is clever and has knowledge that the men don’t have. That’s why these powerful women in history and stories were portrayed as evil or as witches (and sometimes both). Medea is shunned by her family because of her magic, so when the ever-so-attractive Jason turns up with an exit plan, Medea decides to help him escape and take her with him. She’s obsessed with him: he pays her attention, and she’s never had anyone pay her attention in a good way before. But as his ardour wanes and he realises that Medusa is a liability, he cheats on her in a big way - and Medea is enraged. She will have her revenge. I don’t blame her. I liked that we learn her motivation for her radical actions - and I empathised with her. The first person narrative certainly helped with that. I didn’t agree with how she went about her revenge, but it was effective πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ. You don’t often read about Hekate, either. I’m hoping Nikita Gill’s new book will sort that out (and I have it on my kindle to read!). This is a dark story. Medea is complex and flawed, but at the same time, she’s so interesting to read about. I’d really recommend this book! Female rage is always good to read about πŸ˜‰#bookstagram #booklove #bibliophile #instareads #bookworm
