Tories pledge to get 'all our oil and gas out of the North Sea'
The government warns Kemi Badenoch's plans would "only accelerate the worsening climate crisis".
Tory leader Badenoch says the party will remove all net zero requirements on North Sea oil &gas companies
Badenoch is to focus on "maximising extraction"
Like saying if there were a fight in a pub, everyone would have to repair the damage except those starting the brawl

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is back in the news. Before booking flights, there are 3 questions we need to ask:
1. Is it actually effective at reducing emissions?
2. If it IS effective, where/how should we produce it?
3. If 1 and 2 are sorted, are they enough to offset increases in air travel?

Thing that most amazes me about these stats is the fact they are so out of date. 2022 stats at the end of 2024? C'mon DfT. You can do better than that.

Ayayayyy what a week for EVs
News of the Stellantis Luton factory closure has been conflated with the ZEV mandate failing, but it's pretty clear to anyone paying attention that the two things are not really related...
2 big things to note on this:

Hi Paul, why will it "trash" UK car manufacturing? When 80% of the cars we make here are exported, and 80% of the cars we buy are made abroad? Worth remembering that all the car manufacturers were supportive of the mandate, and most have declared combustion car phase out dates around 2030 anyway!

Britain gears up to relax EV sales rules
Ministers are in talks with industry as factories are threatened with closure β and bringing back subsidies for buying electric cars is not ruled out
It's extremely disappointing to see continued doubt cast on the UK's ZEV mandate - one of our biggest carbon saving measures to date.
Weakening the regulation would put UK's climate goals at risk & the ability for the UK to keep drawing in affordable EV models.

How proposed 'flyer tax' would work and why it could make your flight cheaper
An environmental expert has revealed what a 'flyer tax' would really mean to Brits' holidays and the one secret that airlines like to keep hush-hush
"It is really really odd, it is down-right bizarre actually that airlines don't pay fuel duty [...] the aviation sector are very happy with no one knowing it because as soon as people hear it, they're like 'that just doesn't add up at all'- @mattfinch00.bsky.social.

Jeremy Hunt hikes aviation tax in Budget - what it means for your holidays
Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has announced a hike in the tax paid for those on "non-economy flights" - such as business class and first class as part of his 2024 Budget
"It's baffling that the Chancellor didn't do this years ago. But it's still completely unbelievable that airlines don't pay a penny in fuel duty when you and I have to pay every time we fill our car up. Where's the fairness in that?" - @mattfinch00.bsky.social.

Why tyre emissions are the ticking pollution time bomb
This was the year we all learnt the word βUlezβ, as time, emotion and vast political capital were spent in an ill-tempered effort to clean the air we breathe. Yet what if in our obsession with exh...
"Pollution from tyre wear is a massive problem that no one is talking about. EVs are way better than their fossil predecessors because they donβt spew out a toxic cocktail from a tailpipe, but they are not perfect." - Matt Finch (@mattfinch00.bsky.social), our UK policy manager.
