Of course, Malaysia and the USA have much in common when it comes to letting migrants die. Nurul Amin Shah Alam survived Malaysia, but this statement exemplifies the attitude to those who donโt says.com/my/news/anyo...
โIt is ridiculous to blame Border Patrol for an individualโs death a week after their last interaction with them,โ the department posted on X on Friday.
Idk man lots of things wrong with this and obviously the Trump administration is just 100% teruk but anyway โridiculousโ is not a word you use when people are upset about someone literally dying on your watch

My partner's Mum is one of the many Filipinos working in the Middle East. Please spare a thought for the Global South workers in places like the UAE. They're much more likely to be at risk than wealthy Westerners.
Yes, many countries provide healthcare to all residents equally (same cost, or free for everybody), regardless of citizenship.
Inability to pay deposit means denial of treatment. This happens all the time. Although I have also observed instances of discrimination & inadequate care after admission.
โCheaper than anywhere else in the world where they offer free healthcareโ doesnโt make sense.
Denial of treatment is a constant issue and even when someone has an emergency, the pressure to pay is immensely stressful. Malaysiaโs two-tier system discourages seeking healthcare.
For a much higher fee than citizens, sure.
Illegal clinics, run by & for migrants, exist because Malaysia imposes high financial barriers to healthcare for foreigners. Enforcement without addressing this does not solve the bigger problem. The Malaysian Medical Association seems to have stopped short of saying this. thesun.my/news/malaysi...

Your auntie took you to see Pulp Fiction? Cute.
An additional risk is the governmentโs own complacency: its systemic exclusion of non-citizens from affordable healthcare. Although TB is treated for free, I knew a young refugee who died of it three years ago because getting diagnosed in the first place cost money she didnโt have.

An absolutely stunning read.

Canโt believe itโs a year since I wrote this. Please take a moment to imagine what this has meant for day-to-day refugee support. For the past year. With crises every day. And I donโt even live or work in the USA.

I helped a refugee get resettled to the US just in time before Trumpโs inauguration. I thought by she would be safe even if subsequent cases would be rejected. Instead I still worry for her future. Luckily she left Minneapolis just before all this kicked off.

If human rights aren't of interest, try the business case: "Such arbitrary actions create an environment of unpredictability that could drive away both local and foreign investors [...] international travellers seek destinations governed by the rule of law." www.malaymail.com/news/malaysi...

Always interested in these stories! My pre-Malaysia life yielded maybe two stories of things that happened to folks in my circles; after I moved to Malaysia, I lost count.
Canโt sleep so I switched on my phone and started reading the replies to this. Great move!!
