Can't wait!! 📚🍸

1/10. Tory peer Daniel Hannan has posted a potted history of slavery that demonstrates how historical understanding is being twisted by politicians. I’ll examine it in light of historians’ research.
Antigua? Runner-up guess: St Kitts.

In this adapted excerpt from The Crown’s Silence, which examines the royal family’s links with slavery from Elizabeth I to the present, Ottobah Cugoano directly appeals to the monarchy – but is met with silence. www.theguardian.com/news/2026/ja...

Ignore the inevitable, instinctive, ad hominem, knee jerk hostility to a book on slavery and the monarchy in the right wing press. This is a better glimpse of @brookenewman.bsky.social’s new book:

A sign with writing in Chinese and a translation that reads 'do not visit hubbub of civilisation', illustrated with four people, two of whom have megaphones as heads and two others with normal heads and their fingers in their ears.
This speaks to me.
Thank you!! 🙏
'In their ambitious histories of slave resistance, Gibson and Hazareesingh are working in the tradition of Aponte, offering a new intellectual and political perspective on the emergence of freedom in the modern world.' Delighted by this generous review from @soccerpolitics.bsky.social ❤️
Thank you!! 🙏

🚨The Great Resistance is officially out in the US. Many thanks to everyone who followed along with my chapter snippets and photos over the past 35 days. Now you can read the whole book! And I hope it can serve as a useful reminder of the power of people to end seemingly intractable problems. ❤️
It was an absolute pleasure to talk history and discuss my reasons for writing The Great Resistance with Martin Pengelly for The Guardian – I hope you enjoy our conversation too! ❤️
