There is so much greenwashing and people are so easily taken in by it. They think if it’s roasted in Ireland it’s ethical !

Still amazed by the fact that anyone can put "this coffee is ethically sourced" on a bag without having to show any proof of that. If it's true for coffee, I'd imagine it's true for other foods.
“But what a weak barrier is truth when it stands in the way of an hypothesis.”
Mary Wollstonecraft, in A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792), argues that present realities cannot defeat the power of an imagined future — that revolutions begin with the imagination. #IWD26
Philip Pullman said that anything that a child might encounter in their childhood is appropriate material for a children's story.
Another great read from @tupped.bsky.social
A black and white photograph of a woman wearing an ornate light coloured dress with ruffles. She's seated on an ornately carved wooden chair, with her right hand resting on the head of a large black and white dog of the border collie persuasion.

Eunice Foote, who theorised and demonstrated the greenhouse gas effect in the 1850s, but was largely overlooked.

She was thrilled to become the first teacher from a government-sponsored school in India to get a Fulbright exchange award to learn from U.S. schools. People asked two questions that clouded her joy.
There’s an Indian journalist in Israel right now reporting in Hindi about how bomb shelters in Israel will allow even the pets of Jews in but will not open its doors to the Indian workers our shithole government sent in droves to make up for genocided Palestinian labor. Apartheid regime.
A political movement or party which reaches a point of unrestrained power gets there by having ranks of stooges they can stuff in at all levels to just do what they're told. But they do a second job. Stuffing institutions with stooges also neuters them. This is great if you want to make sure that you just get what you want without any resistance from checks and balances. This is bad if you encounter a problem that can't be solved by a stooge. Because you've drained your system of all of its effectiveness, you are left just asserting things in the face of reality. This has been the Republican mode for decades. And it has worked for them, because they are surrounded by media and institutional stooges who are willing to tell the general public that they are right and reality is wrong. The US has never been more institutionally stooged than it is today. thegist.ie
About a year ago, I wrote a Gist on the consequences of relying on idiots to pack and neuter institutions.
I feel it may have even more relevance today.

I’d like to know this also please ?
Is there a way to check / confirm whether a short-term let us legal or not?
In the depths of a housing crisis, Dublin needs homes, not AirBnBs.
Managed to get an application for a full-time AirBnB in the Liberties rejected so that it'll be a home instead.
If you know of an illegal AirBnB in your area, drop me a message and we'll get on it.
Pic of me and my still new-ish book, The Ghost Limb: Alternative Protestants and The Spirit of 1798.
Walking boots, a flask of tea, headphones and hand sanitiser. This was basically the research method for the book. Lockdown walking and talking.
Photo of me in Tullynakill graveyard in County Down, looking for inscriptions on United Irish graves.
A photo of a postit that says 'Do Not Fear To Speak'. This was my mantra while writing the book, and for a long time the provisional title. By the end of writing, I had lost the fear.
I've been doing that Irish thing of being too embarrassed to say hello, would you like my book?
It's The Ghost Limb: Alternative Protestants and the Spirit of 1798. A tribe of 20 modern day northern dissenters go walking around the sites of 1798, asking what this politics could mean for today.

An ADSBx map showing DHS 737 N475US landing at Shannon
Heads-up Ireland: The newest plane in DHS's deportation fleet just landed at Shannon. However, this is not a deportation or military flight, the US gov using it to evacuate Americans from the Middle East (who are in danger because of the dumb war we started). #SpeirGorm #SpéirGhorm #IrishSky
Last year, I took part in a pilot writing residency at The Dock in Leitrim, working on a book I kept calling my "tiny weird non-fiction project". This short residency is now being rolled out and seeking applications. Honoured they used the title. Apply/spread the word. www.thedock.ie/artists/open...
Ireland will remember what International Law is on or after 18th March.
I was hopeful to begin with, I could not have been more wrong.
I'll believe AI has gained consciousness when it starts creating pithy posts On Here as a thinly veiled cry for help and NOT A MOMENT SOONER
This is where we are with the findings on our foresight review www.lrfoundation.org.uk/news/an-end-... if you're working on sociotechnical assurance or safety by design am v keen to hear of best practice ...
Is just like at school: you just need one idiot to not follow the rules and suddenly you're all in detention. I think if Anthropic had any backbone they'd respond to this moment by stopping development of general purpose models and withdrawing some tools.
Or, to put it another way, I've changed my mind: I think existential threat is now a relevant framing for AI safety. But it's not the existential threat of loss of control of AGI, it's the existential threat of the US govt having the ability to rashly use LLMs that have been deployed in haste
The heart wants what the heart wants. And I want to be gratuitously rude about the US Government.
It’s always an intelligent, informative, funny and insightful 👏
An aerial view of a hundred freshly dug graves for the school girls while families gather around
Six days on, a New York Times investigation concludes that the US bombed the school.
175 are dead, 150+ of whom are schoolgirls aged 7-12.
