Viscoelasticity and interface properties of multi-component condensates govern protein sequestration and suppression of amyloid formation Stress granules (SGs) are multi-component proteinโ€“RNA condensates widely viewed as crucibles for fibril formation in neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. What physical principles actually govern whether stress granules promote or suppress amyloid formation?

Does targeting enzymes and substrates in a condensate lead to rate enhancement? No. Here, we investigate how the condensate environment can inhibit an enzyme reaction.

Spoiler: Mass-transport limitations. We find a strong correlation between diffusion and reaction rates.

Plants monitor the integrity of their barrier by sensing gas diffusion - Nature A study using Arabidopsis shows that plants can monitor the integrity of their outer barriers by sensing gas diffusion, enabling them to initiate wound repair to prevent water loss and pathogen entry.

Plants can sense when their barrier is injuredโ€”and repair it! ๐ŸŒฑ
This stunning work, led by Hiroyuki Iida, shows that wounding is sensed through the diffusion of two gases: ethylene and oxygen.
I had the pleasure of contributing and see this project grow.
