I love my top 4 movies here, but Iron Claw truly surprised me emotionally. I was deep in the weeds on multiple jobs and finishing post on a film. And when that movie hit me with that ending, I just couldn't stop crying. Favorite Durkin film. Favorite Efron film. A true stunner all these years later.
Iβm weird and donβt make an annual top movies list til a couple of years later, after awards buzz dies down, and Iβve finally caught up on movies. So here are my favorite films from 2023, another great year for films that go beyond these 25.
A legend and a mensch. RIP Rob Reiner
One of my all-time favorite clips of Rob Reiner, from his Friars Club Roast in 2000, as he reads aloud Roger Ebert's infamous scathing review of his movie North. The man had an amazing sense of humor about himself. RIP.
It Ends is now available to watch on the @letterboxd.social video store! Please watch our movie thanks! boxd.it/SBUi
This is a really great high concept movie. A group of college friends take a wrong turn and end up on a road that doesn't seem to end. Like ever. A really great premise taken to its best possible conclusion. Loved it.
A perfect way finally watch the great βIt Endsβ and just a breath of fresh air to the indie film landscape. Watch these when the store launches in a couple of days!!
The worldβs largest streaming company swallowing one of its biggest competitors is what antitrust laws were designed to prevent. The outcome would eliminate jobs, push down wages, worsen conditions for all entertainment workers, raise prices for consumers, and reduce the volume and diversity of content for all viewers. Industry workers along with the public are already impacted by only a few powerful companies maintaining tight control over what consumers can watch on television, on streaming, and in theaters. This merger must be blocked.

Nouvelle Vague gets me.
So pumped for this, man. Genuinely looking forward to it.
Barbara is absolutely wonderful and to see her taken like this is horrifying in so many ways. Please read Barbara and Tuckerβs story and donate in anyway you can so they can bring her home.
Thank you Cargill π
Talent isn't rare. Throw an apple & you hit someone with talent. Perseverance? rare. Work ethic? exceedingly rare; the willingness to grind. Being able to endure the scorn, rejection & privation a life in the arts dooms you to in the United States is unicorn-scarce. But talent? Talent is everywhere.
Genuinely couldnβt be more thrilled to see @paulgandersman.bsky.social and @peterhallhuman.bsky.social great film find a great home with the Magnolia team. Congratulations to the entire cast and crew!

Sometimes I'll watch five or 10 minutes of a Scorsese movie just to get a contact high from the images, performances, and music. I think I would like his movies even if they had nothing to say. And they always have something to say.

Q: How do you want to be remembered? Have you thought about this? James Gunn: I donβt give a shit. I want to be remembered that I was nice to my family, that my family and friends love me, but I donβt believe in any of that shit. First of all, everythingβs a sand castle. Somebody wrote me that the other day. βWe have these problems, but that doesnβt last. What will be remembered forever is the movies.β Iβm like, βNo, it wonβt. Itβs just fucking disintegrating with everything else.β What I really do care [about is] that Iβm good to my wife, and I really do care that Iβm good to my friends and my brothers and my sister and my mom. I went to the funeral of one friend a few years ago, and he was split up from his wife, but he hadnβt treated her well, hadnβt treated his friends well. He had stood me up three times, supposed to meet me for lunch or something, and didnβt show up. Funerals are always sad, but I think thereβs a kind of fulfilling sad where people are crying because they love somebody so much. And then thereβs this sort of depressing sad, where itβs like he just disappointed everybody, and itβs really hard for people to say nice things. We loved him, but it was hard, and that really affected me. Iβm like, βI donβt want my funeral to be that.β So I guess I really do think about it sometimes, but in terms of that: I want people to cry because I was good to them.
James Gunn, man. I haven't seen a frame of the new Superman movie beyond what's in the trailers, but how can you not want to root for this dude. www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv...
