Iran war a 'wake-up call' on EU fossil fuel dependency, Harris warns
The Finance Minister said there has been โnot enoughโ diversification in how Ireland and Europe sources its energy since the war in Ukraine.
Me after having slept through half a dozen alarms: Wow, what a wake-up call this is

I had Codex create a version of the map of the lighthouses of the Northern seas, including real colors, light patterns & distances
But then I had it also create a mode set in a Lovecraftian 1920s where you need to place lighthouses to ward off things from the Deep: night-watch-bulwark.netlify.app

Female Common Earwigs Forficula auricularia are very good mothers. After spending the winter guarding her batch of eggs she cares for the nymphs for several weeks and regurgitates food for them. The nymphs will disperse when they are large enough to fend for themselves. Dartmoor, Devon

Here are all the lighthouses of the Northern Seas, each light is the right color, each turns or pulses at the right frequency, and is scaled with its brightness. You can also see how far they are visible.
I had Claude Code build this by giving instructions in English: lighthouse-atlas.netlify.app

Darragh OโBrien drafts in state agencies to find solutions to traffic congestion in the capital
Transport Minister โnot writing anything offโ in bid to ease problem in urban areas
Has he considered not shelving rail projects? Not cutting funding for expansion of public transport could be worth looking at too.

The number of people living in emergency homelessness accommodation has surpassed 17,000 for the first time - the figure stood at 17,112 at the end of January 2026, including 5,319 children. The overall figure is up 10.6% in the last twelve months. @virginmedianews.bsky.social

This is a massive scandal.
Labour has invented a made-up tactical vote organisation to trick Gorton and Denton into voting for them.
How can this even be legal?

I can't be the only one who is made /uncomfortable/ by the way that razor clams burrow into sand, right?
The final moments of this video by Kate Crump on the Oregon coastline are sort of the crowning glory of horror. ๐ฌ
But how does this even work?
Let's talk about bivalve mobility (if we must).

So math & AI have gone through a messy journey in recent months from: "WOW look AI did it!!! (but on closer examination it didn't)" to "It did some of the things it said but hallucinated others" to "It did it with some caveats" to "It did over half autonomously" Expect this in other fields as well.

Bus drivers' union want to see hi-vis jackets become 'mandatory' for cyclists
The union said that the issue has grown due to a โproliferationโ of electric vehicles.
We firmly oppose this measure, as existing evidence indicates that such laws do not, in fact, protect people who cycle.
The union should be calling for better active transport infrastructure instead of deflecting responsibility to the most vulnerable people on the roads.

I think I was trying to fit too much into this...
The last few weeks of threats of making high-vis and helmet mandatory for all cyclists -- which is still a live threat for e-bicycles (with motors limited to 25km/h) -- have been draining.
A lot of it stems from how dysfunctional the RSA is.

This kind of thing is depressingly common. Pantibar has been on Capel St (a busy commercial street with many bars and restaurants) for over 18 years, and there was another bar there for 10 years before us, and people will *still* move in above us and then start complaining about the noise ๐คท๐ผโโ๏ธ๐คช๐ก

What a wildly stupid idea.
Mandatory helmets and high viz is a proven remedy to reduce the number of people cycling. It effectively kills off things like Dublin Bikes.
That's why no other EU country does anything like this. Pure madness.

Spotlighting The World Factbook as We Bid a Fond Farewell
Somewhat devastating news today from the CIA: One of CIAโs oldest and most recognizable intelligence publications, The World Factbook, has sunset. There's not even a hint as to why they โฆ
The CIA just stopped publishing their World Factbook and took every page, including the archived copies of previous versions!
This sucks. It was public domain, so I recovered the 2020 edition (the last one published as a zip file) and shared it to GitHub simonwillison.net/2026/Feb/5/t...

This is a typical knee-jerk, victim-blaming reaction, but it shouldn't come as any surprise from a Government who have have already backtracked on 30kph limit rollout, cancelled a planned red light camera rollout, and cancelled the recommended scrapping of the unfit RSA. Absolute clowns.
