One more thought. It was thanks to J.S.'s music (& of course, that of Gloria Estefan!!) that I came to know about Selena, Barrio Boyzz, Álvaro Torres, Luis Enrique, y más...) It's thanks to THEIR MUSIC in the 90s that the reality of the BEAUTIFUL Latine communities in the U.S. came into view for me.
And now...I just want to offer love, solidarity, care, for all my Spanish-speaking neighbors...for all immigrant families...for the gorgeous multiracial and multilingual reality that we live here in Minneapolis and elsewhere. Ningún ser humano es illegal!!
That said, I've long wished his politics (as least as he's articulated them publicly) were more progressive. Props to Ricky Martin & Bad Bunny for using their voices to speak truth to power. But again, J.S.'s presence and voice, as a Black Latino man, itself is something that matters.
Fwiw: Before Bad Bunny, before Ricky Martin, there was for me, JON SECADA. Every album he released had at least 2 songs in Spanish on it. It was through him that I--as a white girl from a small town in Vermont--came to understand this country as a multiracial & multilingual one in a way I hadn't.
Finally, a food-related article that makes a modicum of sense to me!! It's good to see *someone* articulate a less anthropocentric, individualistic approach, and rather point to the well being of the planet and help us think about other creatures besides humans!

Hearing this song made me feel connected to the rest of the world in the way I hadn't for a while. Though we're making powerful connections with neighbors here inside Minneapolis, it actually helps to feel that other people beyond our region are seeing us/standing in solidarity...

Payne Osman Chughtai Wonsley Rainville Vetaw Warren Shaffer Stevenson Chavez Whiting Chowdhury Palmisano MAYOR ACTION Mayor did not sign this action within the time specified by City Charter. This action is valid and effective as if approved by the Mayor. Calling on the State of Minnesota and Governor Walz to enact an eviction moratorium to keep Minneapolis families in their homes and protect them from ICE.
We need an EVICTION MORATORIUM NOW.
Our neighbors risk being separated from their families when they go to work. They also run the risk of being displaced if they don’t.
Sadly, Mayor Frey refused to sign the resolution calling on the Governor to enact this moratorium.
The North Star Chapter of the @sierraclub.org stands with our neighbors in demanding #ICEOut of Minnesota now.
It's time to suspend the normal order of business to demand immediate accountability for federal agents, and for Congress to immediately intervene.
Minneapolis resident Patty O’Keefe, who was violently arrested by ICE, says one agent told her that "obstructing" agents is "why that lesbian bitch is dead,” referring to Renee Good.
