BOOK #10, 2026
THE WONDER LANDS WAR, Peter Darbyshire (2025)
A hardboiled urban fantasy that joyfully fuses literary, religious, and mythological genres. For those who prefer their fantasies warped, these are a treat!

We killed 85 schoolgirls. We are not the good guys.
I cannot stress enough the extreme danger of social media platforms, especially Twitter and YouTube, continuing to generate and spread misinformation.
There are more and more data every day showing that this is an existential threat to everything ranging from elections to health.
There's only ever been one good book trailer and it was for @coreyredekop.bsky.social's zombie novel Husk.

Book cover, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, by John Russo. Titan, 1974, 2025.
BOOK #9, 2026
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, John Russo (1974)
A zombie chiller that canβt reach the cinematic heights of its source material. Unable to duplicate the intense, skin-crawling dread George A. Romero created, itβs a fun but slight offering, an amuse bouche to the filmβs meaty main course.

Itβs awesome! Between Matt, Jay, and Michael J. Fox, no one does time travel better than Canadians!
Book cover, TENDER IS THE FLESH, by Agustina Bazterrica. Scribner, 2017, 2020.
BOOK #8, 2026
TENDER IS THE FLESH, Agustina Bazterrica (2017)
After meat becomes poisonous, governments introduce the production of βspecial meatβ i.e. people. Bazterrica effectively creates a world monstrous & familiar, a grotesque parody of humanity only a few steps to the right of our own.

They raided the jailed children to steal their letters.
The problem, in federal officials' minds, wasn't confining children in prison-camp conditions; it was that the children could tell the public about it.

BOOK #7, 2026
REREAD #4
THE DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS, John Wyndham (1951)
Gold standard in the βcozy catastropheβ genre. The world goes blind, bad timing considering the surplus of carnivorous walking plants. Arguably skimpy on actual triffids, this is a fantastic adventure with modern-day resonance.

I became Senior VP at a multi-million dollar company at age 26. My salary was $600k. This was in 2018. How did I do it? Blacked out lines CEO (my dad) promoted me to SVP. There are no gimmicks. There are no shortcuts.
This is blackout poetry to me
The announcers (and these are the Canadian ones) are so stunned/shocked/disbelieving. One remembers how young these athletes sometimes are. But this was off-the-charts unexpected. Malinin came EIGHTH.
@deadder.bsky.social - this one is friggin' awesome!
The Contrarian
US Olympic Curling Team member speaks out against ICE:
"I'm proud to represent Team USA. But we'd be remiss if we didn't mention what's going on in Minnesota and what a tough time it's been. What's happening is wrong. There's no shades of gray."
we need to talk about that Ring Super Bowl ad
NEW: ICE is leasing offices throughout the US as part of a secret, months-long expansion campaign. WIRED is publishing dozens of these locations.

ACCEPTANCE, Jeff VanderMeer (2014)
The Southern Reach trilogy comes to a triumphantly singular close (or so we thought). I donβt know where the recent fourth novel can take this, but I soon will, and Iβm eager to visit Area X one more time.

Good morning. The President of the United States was in the middle of the most serious child sex trafficking ring of the last quarter century.
He is referenced not a dozen times in the case files. Not 100 times. Not 1,000 times. Heβs referenced 38,000 times.
"The people tearing these loved ones apart are often the very same people who have spent so much of the past several years lecturing the American people, and in particular American women, about the importance of parenthood and family," writes @moiradonegan.bsky.social.
A Secret Panel to Question Climate Science Was Unlawful, Judge Rules
I keep watching this because it's so finely tuned. Margaret isn't just interrupting, she has a compulsion. She gives her answer, is briefly relieved that she scratched it, but over time the remorse and internal conflict rise. You see her internal struggle. Subtle comedy!

Book cover, SHORT THINGS, ed. John Gregory Betancourt. Wildside Press, 2019.
BOOK #5, 2026
SHORT THINGS, ed. John Gregory Betancourt (2019)
Wobbly but fun anthology, inspired by John W. Campbellβs βWho Goes There?β Some stories are sublime, some forgettable; a few couldnβt survive without knowledge of the source material. For fans of the story (or movies), worth a read.
