On This Day: May 26
In 1897, Dracula by Bram Stoker was published in London. With one book, Stoker gave the world Count Dracula, rewrote horror literature, and set the template for every vampire story that followed. Some legends refuse to die.

The Grant Gustin on Green Arrow's grave meme, but the V-flicking Grant is now Peter Cushing and the grave contains Christopher Lee's Dracula. We know this because the frankly awesome woodcut image of the Count from "Dracula A.D. 1972" is prominently displayed in the centre of the headstone.
It's apparently World Dracula Day, today, and sweet serendipity also means it's Peter Cushing's birthday, with Christopher Lee's birthday falling tomorrow.
It's World Dracula Day! It seems like a nice day for a picnic With The Draculas.

So today is World Dracula Day? If you're off to Whitby (or indeed anywhere) to celebrate, have fun and don't get bitten.

The Jolly Fisherman/"Skegness is so bracing" poster by John Hassall for GNR, except the Jolly Fisherman is now a Jolly Count Dracula. The wording has been changed to "WHITBY IS SO BRACING".
A Happy World Dracula Day to all who celebrate.
When the world is terrible, all I want to do is watch movies about people who feel terrible and learn how to survive in the face of all the terrible. #Thunderbolts gave me exactly that. Sincerely adored it.
SINNERS. Go see it. In a theater. 70mm if possible. Iβd read nothing about the movie, watched no trailers β went in blind and was BLOWN AWAY. And Delroy Lindo better get an Oscar nomination.
SINNERS RECREATED IT
Imagine if streamer companies like Apple based in California actually paid taxes here and those billions in taxes helped incentivize film/tv production in the stateβ¦

If you see SINNERS theatrically, know that a good chunk of that money goes directly to the artist. Good on Coogler for making that deal.
Last night was the 250th anniversary of Paul Revere's midnight ride to warn the Minutemen of approaching British troops.
I want to take a moment to share an excerpt from the Declaration of Independence's grievances against King George III.
Remind you of anyone?
Really infuriates me when I see articles framing the current entertainment production slowdown as not having βrecoveredβ from the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes when the actual problem is every studio took years to contend with streaming and then went all in on the wrong solution at the same time.
YEP!!! Being on the 2023 WGA Strike line, my motto was βbring on the fun. So I organized themed days!
Get creative! I facilitated a drag show, karaoke, a silent disco (with headphones and a live DJ!), dancers, food, AND even a marching band. Called local reps and press. Make it a party!
(WGA feature screenwriters, excluding indies) This is an absolutely STAGGERING distillation of the current state of the entertainment industry. In the replies, they go on to mention TV writing jobs were down year-over-year from 3100 to ~1800. A 42% decrease. Why have we suddenly stopped making art??
The reason why all the WGA members are quiet at the moment is we're too busy on our group chats.
The reality of all this WGA news today: Features are still strong, but so many out of work TV writers are moving toward features, crowding out young voices. That doesnβt mean you canβt break in if you havenβt but you arenβt competing with other fledgling writers; youβre competing with seasoned pros.
WGA reports jobs lost www.indiewire.com/news/busines...
there are only 1,819 working TV writers on WGA shows right now????? Jfc
How bad is it out here for writers? From the WGA:
According to Guild data, approximately 37% fewer WGA-covered episodic TV series aired in the 2023-24 season, and the seasonβs series had 1,319 fewer writer jobs than the prior season. The decline in the number of jobs impacted writers at all levels.
we are not better off for no longer having it: we now churn out legions of inexperienced writers who donβt get nearly enough road under the tires necessary to become great. 22 episodes a year meant there was a farm system and opportunities to actually learn the craft, the business, and the art.
