The video game industry is facing record layoffs and huge amounts of uncertainty.
I need a union contract to feel safe.

i played the Vholume demo today, very fluid motion, the main conceit is the racing mechanic, but you can just ignore it and explore and there are things to find
movement-wise it reminds me a lot of Bloodthief, just without combat
while the spaces are like simpler NaissanceE/Babbdi
i want to be able to not just guess how something works i want to know the nuts and bolts of the thing as it pertains to the physical laws
but i also want to touch the ineffable and spit in the face of a god that is not there
while i am drawn to perhaps overly-grounded settings
i also love surreal and hyperbolic imagery
how does one reconcile these opposing forces
how to allow the impossible to exist within the confines of something resembling reality?
i am not sure that the combat is meant for me
but the completely unexplained exploration and the striking aesthetic definitely is
store.steampowered.com/app/2063390/...
some kind of super powerful machine being with a giant red eye wrapped in white bandages as a head strokes a thick red-lined sword
the same machine looking up in defiance at an abstract glowing tower representing a skyscraper-sized enemy wand a pulsating nexus of power at the top - you
the player character, a green-eye robot with a ragged cape standing among red grass with a backdrop of incomprehensibly huge machines and a distant glowing eye instead of a sun
a painterly, nearly abstract image of the player character from a low angle looking up a dark elevator shaft
so i just played VA Proxy
when i was talking about a "black and white game" this kind of aesthetic is pretty close to where i was looking to end up
sure there *are* a couple colors, but it is mostly texture and light
[wojack pointing] yoooo he rejected both hedonism and asceticism and is escaping samsara motherfuckers!
Icon Nest is (probably) not going in the mech thread because even though in the future the walking artillery is supposed to move, the player is not really a pilot
interested in opposing viewpoints though
store.steampowered.com/app/2950790/...
seeing people talk about Iron Nest but nobody seems to grasp that it is Papers Please except instead of stamps you only have artillery shells
the game is cool but watching people bombing civilian targets without thought is not
the game's Steam page literally asks if you will follow orders
the inevitable result of VC human centipede

cannot believe i have not already done this!
i will be posting mech piloting games in this thread
mostly new-ish and in-development but also older ones i do not see people talking about
as somebody who considered themselves a "writer" from a young age i got a lot of criticism for using different perspectives and tenses than was expected
some of the coolest experiences i have had relating fiction to somebody was 2nd person perspective
one size need not fit all!
"thumpers? are we in Dune??"
i still have not seen Dune pt 2, do they come up in that one or is it only in the books?
or maybe it was in part 1 i just forgot
in her run, when preacher lets her through the gate to the mine, the whole area gets set on fire and he just runs around in the fire
does that usually happen??
*trying to convince herself about the preacher*
"he's... coool... he's cooool... totally not weird..."
but then he really grows on her
"i like working with him, he's nice! he deals with the headcrabs"
she apparently cut like 20 minutes of running around Ravenholm before she found the yellow switch, having used pretty much all of her ammo in that time
"i don't have *shit*"
*of the preacher*
"he's crazy"
"uhg i just wanna go back to Alyx"
lol
she is not a fan of the poison headcrabs because they are "more spidery"
when the preacher shoots the headcrab behind her she turns just in time to not see it and so is very confused, it is very funny because she looks around for a while and does not see it until the last second
she gets really good with the gravity gun really fast and is flinging saw blades and explosive barrels like she was born for it
that keyboard and mouse input scheme is doing her a lot better than the gamepad for sure
*gets separated from Alyx during the attack*
Alyx: I can't leave my dad!
"i can't leave you!!"
*upon first meeting Dr. Eli Vance*
"where's Alyx? i only care about Alyx."
*hears Alyx*
"is that Alyx??"
"hey Alyx!! oh, she won't talk to me" *sad*
opens the video with "we're gonna see Alyx again hopefully"
and she *immediately* clocks Dr. Mossman's backhanded compliment about Dr. Vance and Dr. Kleiner
Mossman: I do so envy you working with Eli and Dr. Kleiner when they were at the top of their field.
"Uh do they suck now??"
it is really nice to be able to allocate 16gb of RAM to multiple VMs without even worrying about it
