I will share more of our findings as we get into data analysis, but we're reviewing energy usage & climate impact metrics for our cloud-hosted digital collections at MPOW, and the results have been really misaligned with what our expectations were. I strongly encourage other folks to do this.

What is "bit rot"? How safe are your data? Researching this for future episodes on the subject brought me to the Centre of Computing History in Cambridge www.computinghistory.org.uk where I talked to Adrian Page-Mitchell, who showed me a "decaying" laser disc (BBC Domesday project).
Thank you!
Everyone wants to blame the content: misinformation, bots, polarisation. That mistakes catalysts and symptoms for the underlying causes. The crisis isnβt bad information, it's that the very information infrastructure we relied on to create a shared understand of the world had changed completely.

Media Notes for Justification of the Orphan Makers Do not be quick to put the boot in Those accused of shooting A peaceful mother in the face (three times) Her demise may well be justified Our population now is radicalised have you noticed how women often fail To even obey the voices of the male?) And this was no run of the mill "mum" She was a deviant one A lesbian And we cannot dismiss How the sapphic can put men with pistols Into a panic She may not have committed the sin of being brown But her profile page declared a pronoun! A typical trait of an enemy of the state But wait A little more She called herself a "poet" too And women like that are often shrews To take language and create a rhythm Another clue to domestic terrorism So I say again From autocue to you The world is surely a better place If we shoot love and peace and protest in the face
I wrote this poem the day after Renee Good was murdered - itβs about how the media and politicians immediately dehumanised her. I have had a few people ask βwho wrote it?β So I am putting it up again - written in anger

It's a reliable *shocked Pikachu face* line for audiences, but I have to explain that when we started archiving Ukrainian cultural heritage websites, the instability of the power grid in the Bay Area was a bigger impediment and risk than Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure.
