The King’s message was simple: stop protesting and I’ll stop taxing.

I’ve wondered how I would feel about a VAT that was bundled with a refundable tax credit (paid monthly) equal to the median consumer cost. That way 50% of the population has some kind of net benefit. The tariffs are clearly intended to be a shadow VAT more than anything else.
