Moving to Revelstoke, I noticed how calling the RAPP line about bears stirs debate.
Input from local govs & non-profits in BC shows that the message on when & how to report urban bears varies, as some communities work to manage bears themselves.

As someone who often accesses avalanche-prone backcountry in the winter - & spent many weeks in northern California growing up - I’m heartbroken by this nightmarish news & wishing these people’s families & responding SAR personnel the very best this week 🤍

A warm spell late this January has brought remarkably-different temperatures & snowpack to lower elevations around Revelstoke than what I experienced here in January 2025. Not to worry, though - fresh snow continues to fall even as the degrees crank up above freezing this winter! ☃️

Thanks Richard. It’s an ongoing story & part of the reason it remains noteworthy is critics are concerned that the ship still hasn’t been removed after nearly a year (& won’t be until at least spring). The coast guard’s latest updates also indicate they’re finding increased debris & oil slicks.
My final freelance story of 2025: I heard from the coast guard & industry critics about ongoing work to get a grounded container ship off the shores of Newfoundland - as well as gaps this exposes in Canada’s coastal response capacity 🚢 @nationalobserver.com
