And at the risk of sounding nitpicky the difference between Mamdani's social democracy--which is inherently capitalist--and socialism is significant. Unfortunately we live in a time where anyone slightly left of Attila the Hun is considered a Marxist.
For many, leaving disrupts their high value social networks, business operations, and family and lifestyle (schools, properties, community ties, etc). If their goal is to minimize financial impact, moving is a terrible strategy. And that's reflected in the data, much of it directly from the IRS.
In reality, it's often far more costly for wealthy individuals to leave than to stay. Huge portions of their wealth are a result of key business relationships tied to their city or region.
None of the available data shows that tax hikes on the richβeven substantial onesβtrigger a mass exodus. Some highβincome people move, but the numbers are so small they barely register in terms of lost revenue.
This is one of those posts that sounds plausible, and if it lines up with what someone already believes, it feels validating. The problem is that it just isnβt true.
Once again thinking of Bernie Gunther.

Solidarity, particularly across race and class, is Kryptonite for authoritarian regimes. They can only thrive when their us v. them framing is adopted by society at large, and they join as active or passive collaborators with the regime. So the only response they have is to raise the cost of unity
Good try, NY Times headline writers.
Perfect, Wall Street Journal headline writers.
"I'm not even mad at you dude"
"Are you okay?
The language of modern day terrorists, apparently.
Alex Prettiβs last words were βare you ok?β said the woman next to him who ICE also pepper sprayed in the face.
Jon Stewart points out the key difference between Hitler and Trump: popularity. Trumpβs approval rating dropped to just 37% in his first year in office β evidence that the public narrative around him is changing. βIt ainβt flying in a lot of places where you think it might be flying.β
Four GOP Senators.
At most four Repubs in the House.
Together they could stop nearly all the mad-king's rampages. They would be known to history as Profiles in Courage. They might/would lose the next election. But people have sacrificed a lot more, for a lot less.
"If my platform can bring even a little hope to families in Palestine, then that is what I want to use it for," he said in a statement earlier this season.

Professors can no longer talk about βgenderββbut itβs fine to lust after, objectify, and exploit pre-pubescent and underage girls in Trumpβs America.
Nearly every progressive politician, journalist and organization in America continues to use the website this man controls as a primary means of communication.
Feels notable that a bunch of people who have spent a majority of their waking hours on twitter/X for the past decade are suddenly whining more about bluesky. Even Glenn here who has apparently never actually looked at it to see what the average user here thinks of the DNC & Dem members of Congress
For many Gen Z and millennial Americans, concerns about finances and the economy can feel ever present. NPR wants to know how economic barriers are affecting you and your political views.
President Trump's crusade against D.C.βs homelessness fails to solve some of its deepest struggles: There are not enough services, subsidies or beds to house the thousands of adults and children in the District without permanent housing. https://wapo.st/4mP0xTF
It was meant to solve the housing crisis. Trump is using it to create an enemies list. slate.trib.al/BhQTYLe
The demand for quality releases will be met by smaller studios, like Sandfall Interactive. Itβs a shame that, in the aggregate, video game buyers will purchase almost anything.
More executives fail to negotiate deals to make their games profitable & cut corners to make up for their ineptitude, punishing their staff for caring. This is a trend in the industry. We are approaching a time where itβs safe to ignore big studio output

What I fear Trump will do with his war
open.substack.com/pub/robertre...
NEW: Trump recently pardoned a Virginia sheriff who was convicted of bribery and let donors dodge gun laws and traffic tickets. It's another move by the Trump administration to reward political loyalty at the expense of public trust, @jesspish.bsky.social writes.
Certainly do not dismiss the chaos and consequence of whatβs happening in the Middle East right now, nor the Trump administrations inability to manage it. But you can safely ignore the WW3 fear mongering by people who havenβt even done as much as read a RAND report.
The cost of a coordinated, direct attack by Russia and China against the U.S. would be catastrophic for them. Thereβs always a non-zero chance some kind of attack could happen, but itβs extremely unlikely. Minor skirmishes in the Middle East and cyberattacks are what you can reasonably expect.
Even with disarmament, the U.S. maintains the most advanced and modernized nuclear triad in the world. Conflict in the Middle East is a flashpoint for sure, but thereβs no indication that itβs a precursor to global war. The main risk is the expansion of the war regionally.
