Imagine for second the emails she’s been getting. All for taking over an institute none of these people had heard of until the usual suspects riled them up.

This woman was made the subject of a pressure campaign including bishops with no business to weigh in at all. There’s a word for what this amounts to and it’s not “faithful Catholic witness.”

Message: right-wing pressure works and will continue to be applied.

I hope you all see what's happening: The cops and a bunch of bad-faith "influencers" are manufacturing a crisis over a snowball because they have nothing to hold over the mayor while crime in NYC continues its years-long decline. Watch carefully who plays along with this charade.

Again I ask if any of these people cared about this institute before a professor they clearly had it in for was appointed to run it?

I kind of wonder if this is his take on the Second Amendment or even something like police violence. “I’m unarmed!”

What do these people think of “Gee, Officer Krupke”? Also even many working-class conservatives who are pro-law-and-order rather more jaundiced about cops as a class.

The more stable of those survive and thrive thanks to self-sustaining market of large families but it’s not really scalable. Over time ND’s more mainstream students would start to go elsewhere and gains among conservative students would put a few more Newman Guide institutions out of business.

What conservatives want from Notre Dame is something else entirely, namely, the Newman Guide model: a particular version of Catholic identity enforced by strict written and unwritten rules. That serves and attracts a narrow market but not compatible with ethos of a large research university.

The Vatican had a difficult time understanding U.S. Catholic universities in that era because in other countries where students mostly attend huge public institutions, Catholic universities tend to serve a narrower purpose.

And obviously conservatives moral panicked on exactly this issue through the whole period while being complicit with niche worse evils. Now they want to restore ethos of that era when everyone has a camera/mic and ability to “prove it” and tell all your friends in their pocket.
