Plenty of alternatives have been proposed, and plenty startups tried to enter the market, but you need to be somewhat feature-complete at launch, or you’ll fall flat.

Don’t get me started on what herculean effort would be involved to standardize across the EU. Back when we did the project, stakeholders on client’s lobbying operation mentioned a decade+ of lobbying if client were to pursue a play.
It’s not even that, strictly, but which and who of the public. So many different stakeholders with different rights and different procurement procedures.
Even in Berlin, traffic lights are supplied by two competing industry giants, as the boroughs run procurement, and you need access there for V2I.
The biggest question wasn’t though whether it’s technically feasibly (can be done), but who pays for it and hence drives standardization. No clear answer on this yet, unfortunately, as traffic infrastructure - esp. the public payer part - is an unmitigated mess.

At one intersection, what I presume were left-wing protesters were sharing stories of the Rigaer Str. protests with Palestinian flag-wavers.
Police seemed to be unclear about strategy. Constantly surprised by the fluid situation and constantly changing nexus of protest, always playing catch-up.
Residents were split. In the backstreets, one family I spoke to complained about those protests ”literally poisoning our street”, referring to the burnt down trash cans, while from highter up flags could be seen and cheering heard.
