When I have given some talks about reading history I'm always asked about why the youth doesn't read anymore and what can we do. I always ask how many books have they themselves read this year. Crickets.

an LLM chatbot cannot "implicate itself" in anything, it is a category error to imagine that it can. It does not "know" or "understand" anything (such as what words mean or whether its output is true or false) because it is not a being and does not have a mind.

Thinking of the climate scientist who recently posted here how helpful Claude was and asked if there was a European alternative 🤔 Surely if it is EU made, it can't be evil? It is not like we have our own freaks that get excited about incarcerating & drowning ppl (Frontex et al?).

This applies to everything. Ppl feel it's good on what they don't know well cause it is made to look like it knows + our assumptions of technology. When one points out this then ppl will say: ofc you need to check it. But... if you don't know the topic or coding well, well...

Participated at a deliberative assembly (Leiden) on FAIR assessment re:GenAI. Plagiarism was not mentioned as an issue, the focus was "when is it fair to use it as students & lecturers." I get that ppl are desperate cause they have to grade, but a more fundamental discussion was avoided.

when you are an author (or a student) putting in texts even "just for editing" into gen-AI, you are at risk of plagiarism bec this is how the algorithm works. in old-fashioned academic integrity lingo, you participate a mass "collusion". we end up with 30 essays with the same structure & argument
