Why are we observing a 'green backlash' when serious efforts to decarbonise have scarcely begun? I'm happy to share my working paper, 'The Political Consequences of Climate Ambition: Evidence from Australia', which analyses how voters respond prospectively to proposed climate policies. Brief 🧵:

This research contributes to a broader understanding of public policy & individuals’ attitudes beyond the case of climate . By emphasizing the role of symbolic policies, we provide better insight into how people respond to governmental action, and highlight dimensions beyond material self-interest.

Through a mixed-methods approach (survey experiments + interviews in FR), we move beyond simple cost-based explanations and show how SP can significantly increase support for CP. We also show that SP increase perceptions of fairness, elite behavior, & government credibility among the public

An e.g. of a "symbolic policy" (SP): requiring members of the govt to travel by train instead of plane.
In parallel to the SP, the govt could enact a costly (and efficient) policy (CP) - e.g. reduction of speed limits or carbon tax.
We argue that the SP would make the CP significantly more accepted

We define symbolic policies as policies with minimal material impacts but which send meaningful messages to the public. And we argue that they have the potential to increase support for costly policies by shifting the message that the latter carry - for instance by signaling elite exemplarity.

Despite the urgency of climate action, government still struggle to implement transformative policies with sufficient public support.
In this article, we propose to discuss a new avenue to build support for costly policies among the public, putting forward something we call "Symbolic Policies".

E.P.A. to Stop Considering Lives Saved When Setting Rules on Air Pollution

The EPA is no longer going to consider how many potential lives a pollution regulation would save -- just the costs to industry. This is directly counter to EPA's mission. And it will kill Americans.

Great (depressing) scoop from @maxinejoselow.bsky.social.

In an interview to the Belgian newspaper @lesoir.be, I discuss (in French) the recent heated debates around low emission zones in EU and what it means for climate politics.

While LEZ can be unfair and contested, we should remember that we *can* do just and acceptable policies that work for people!

Our research makes it clear: by capitulating to the right, Labour is driving voters to Reform UK | Tarik Abou-Chadi and Stuart Turnbull-Dugarte Mimicking Farage on immigration is senseless. Labour voters feel betrayed; anti-immigration voters see through the ruse, say academics Tarik Abou-Chadi and Stuart Turnbull-Dugarte

For the Guardian, @turnbulldugarte.com and I discuss our research that clearly shows one thing: Labour's anti-immigration strategy will only strengthen Reform and weaken its own electoral prospects. It won't win voters back but ultimately normalizes the far right

Théodore Tallent in Le Monde: Public support for climate action remains strong The Research Associate argues that most citizens support ambitious climate measures, with opposition largely reflecting political dynamics and concerns over fairness.
