Mayor Lurie yesterday blamed a "group of individuals" for antisemitic chants at a San Francisco protest.
The mayor's version was inaccurate. Video & witnesses reveal a lone, uninvited raving woman.
But the statements led to viral online opprobrium.

well in this specific case he's reposting Lurie cynically lying, so it's either that or in the most generous interpretation, neither bothered to check. the truth has now been reported out by press, and other orgs making false accusations have retracted. what he does with that is on his conscience!

I don't want to draw too much attention to other statements going around including from some attendees of the mayor's rally that are falsely accusing this person of being a DSA member or somehow sanctioned by the very people who tried to chase her out, but it's a fraught situation & clarity matters
I agree that it is frightening and unacceptable that anyone feels emboldened to make that chant in public, I hope that awful bigot is held accountable, and I understand why Wiener and Lurie would want to call out the very real normalization of antisemitism, but it's important to be factual
thankfully at least the press got it right
"A group of individuals chanting tax the rich started chanting tax the Jews" is untrue, full stop. the mayor & his formidable comms dept could have verified the facts before stating this, but they did not, despite multiple clarifications & statements being out. he is not a smol bean, he is the mayor
