I deeply appreciate so many friends & colleagues from @isa-rc28.bsky.social.
Yet, the recent RC28-community statement condemning @isa-sociology.org suspension of ISS –without apparent similar statement on RSS suspension in years– seems biased & contradictory.
I share my email to RC28 Board [1]

Anbindung.

Terrible news for all friends, colleagues and co-authors of Gert Wagner. We pay tribute to a colleague who remained down-to-earth, a tireless supporter to whom we owe new insights and whom we will honour in his memory.

Does social media negatively impact the health of U.S. teenagers? The National Academy of Sciences, among the most authoritative organizations in the country, just released a major report, co-authored by a dozen leading experts in the field. Here's a summary of their conclusions:

In a new article in Nature Scientific Reports I find that male PhD students are almost twice as likely than female PhD students to obtain a cum laude distinction for their dissertation. A cum laude is very rare, and only awarded to 5% of Dutch PhD students.

Measuring social class
Should social class and socioeconomic status be assessed using composite measures that combine measures of income, education, occupation, etc. or should these measures be kept separate?
Two opposing views from recent papers here

Didn't know until now! great! thanks @hagerhardt.bsky.social for this pointer. The survey implementation is yet to come but this looks very useful indeed! Reminds me of the GESIS sociodemgraphic standards.

@malteschierholz.bsky.social, thank you very much for this generous list of links, time & info! This helps a lot and the SOC and Kldb are top - both can be coded in social class schemes without much problems. i wonder whether avoiding open-ended questions is also possible for a concept like class.

but at least once coded and you want to group them, you have all these marvellous projects like manifesto, chapel hill expert surveys and so on to do the real work :) of assigning them to a political wing, faction or so on ...

if people collecting data want to include occupation (because 1/3 of respondents do not answer income questions or income fluctuates too much and education is a somewhat misleading measure) to proxy economic class effects, how would you suggest to do it (very thankful for links to papers on that!)

Problem is you can't really use that format to measure occupation when collecting admin data. Either too manny questions or too expensive to code. There comes my question:

As so told me, my q is not clear (thanks, Andreas). Occup is asked in surveys using 1 to 3 questions with open format answers (detailing what they do or not). Coders code these costly into occup schemes like ISCO. Researchers translate ISCO into social class measures (EGP/ESEC, OESCH, MICRO, etc.).

When i need an easy but nice graph of some function for a method lecture, i ask #ChatGPT to code it in stata or r. most of the times it works perfectly. But when my wishes become to special (the options inside the options, the multiple y axes, etc.), everything breaks down.

Coding differences might also have an affect if job biographies are coded by the same coder instead of coding single job spells. Would only matter of course, if studies differ here. /2

i dk about BHPS, but other reasons for systematic diff could relate to source of occupation info and coding. In SOEP, job info is collected prospectively or retrospectively as part of the occup biography questionaires. There are fewer job changes retrospectively i think. 1/
