# unz() lets you connect to a .zip and treat it like a mini file system, # and you can load files from inside it one_zipped_csv_among_others <- readr::read_csv( unz("lotsa_zipped_csvs.zip"), "one_csv.csv" ) # readr::read_csv() can read a .zip with a single CSV in it one_zipped_csv <- readr::read_csv("big_zipped_file.zip")
Thing I just learned in #rstats: unz() lets you connect to a .zip and load files from inside it without actually unzipping it (great for a file I'm working with that's 30 MB zipped and 1+ GB unzipped, with multiple CSVs in it)
"Letβs state this plainly: a sitting Canadian premier says she asked our enemy... to alter policy in order to help elect a... candidate who is better aligned with that enemy of the country."
I'm with Bruce: illegal or not, we can't treat this as politics-as-usual.

The step-by-step demolition of the US statistical system continues.
ABC News pulled all 538 content from their official website.
I made a backup of the `data` repo. I suggest if you need 538 stuff grab it while you can ASAP:

(1/3) It needs repeating: in 1994, Ukraine was persuaded to give up its nuclear weapons to Russia in return for the US, the UK, and Russia guaranteeing Ukraineβs sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity.

A tiny trump figure in a chair next to a towering Zelensky captures the puny spirit of Trump's cowardice and Russian capitulation.

Please enjoy my last ever post at Climate.gov/ENSO Blog. This afternoon I was fired by the Trump Administration 15 days before my 2yr probationary period ended on March 13.
I have worked at NOAA since 2010, and I'm so incredibly proud of the work I did. If anyone wants a quote, let me know.
Tesla stock is down 25% so far this year after dipping 8% yesterday. It's become humiliating to drive a Tesla in LA, and he's getting his ass kicked by China. I love this journey for Elon because there's still so much lower the stock can go. I believe in us!

The headline that 21 DOGE staffers have resigned is a little misleading. These were employees of the United States Digital Service, which existed pre-administration and was absorbed into Muskβs team. These arenβt the young idiots; these are actual civil servants.
Scatter plot of bill depth vs. length by species (color) and sex (symbol). It shows positive correlations for all species with males tending to have bigger bills than females. sym <- c(1, 16) pal <- c("darkorange","purple","cyan4") plot(bill_dep ~ bill_len, data = penguins, pch = sym[sex], col = pal[species])

With Air, you'll never need to worry about styling your #rstats code ever again. All you need to do is save, and Air takes care of the rest.

StatCan reported today that new house prices dropped a slight 0.1% in January. Two days ago the Canadian Real Estate Association said existing house prices also declined marginally. Overall, house prices have been quite stable for the last twelve months or so. #cdnecon

I really liked this idea of using a histogram as a legend in a choropleth map (since land isn't unemployed; people are), so I made a little guide to doing it with #rstats, {ggplot2}, and {patchwork}

nanoparquet 0.4.1 is out. Reads and writes Parquet files. Comes with a completely rewritten and surprisingly speedy `read_parquet()`, ability to read a subset of columns, `append_parquet()` which does _not_ rewrite the whole file, and lots more: www.tidyverse.org/blog/2025/01...

Tesla's stock is ridiculously overvalued, and even a modest consumer boycott could tank the company, which accounts for the majority of Elon Musk's wealth.
