Russia was behind parcel fires in UK and Europe, investigators say The attacks, which involved self-igniting packages, targeted couriers in Poland, Germany and at a DHL depot in the UK in 2024.

This confirms what we already knew, but what is not talked about enough.
russia, a terrorist state, is directly targeting Europe with acts intended to kill.
It is at war with us.
This will only intensify, maybe dramatically, until Moscow is completely defeated in Ukraine.

Iceland locks in on date for EU referendum | Euractiv As a member of the European Economic Area, Iceland is already aligned with much of the bloc's legislation

Just announced: Iceland has urgently moved up its referendum to join the European Union - to 29 August.

A reminder: ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ธ is in many ways already a non-voting ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ member because of the EEA. This would give them voting power to shape the laws they have to follow.

This is a life and death story for the UK โ€“ so why is it being brushed under the carpet? | Aditya Chakrabortty The news that healthy life expectancy is in decline in Britain exposes a serious truth about the state weโ€™re in, says Guardian columnist Aditya Chakrabortty

From Aditya Chakrabortty: โ€œA child born this morning in Britain can expect to be in good health only until they are 61. The last 20 years of their life will be blighted by illness... healthy life expectancy is now the lowest since 2011, when records began.โ€ www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

I think that his behaviour gives a very strong signal about how heโ€™s going to approach the mid term elections. At some point the Republicans are going to have to face up to the monster theyโ€™ve created before it consumes them as well. Perhaps they ought to look at the French Revolution ๐Ÿค”

Think there's a large element of disbelief around at what on earth the US is doing and hope that somehow Trump will just stop, because otherwise the economic outlook is pretty dire.

Have to say I find the inflation expectations that would follow a lasting oil price shock optimistic to say the least. Optimised supply chains may be resilient but rising costs of key elements can easily work through to prices.

In praise of โ€˜the boring stuffโ€™ My Twitter timeline is full of links to articles about dynamic startups, cutting-edge businesses, inspirational leadership, visionaries and hierarchy-free organisations with self-managed teams. Oh โ€ฆ

Anti-nature policies are a dead end for Labour.

You donโ€™t secure lasting growth by risking long-term harm to the ecosystems we rely on.

The public knows this.

Thereโ€™s no need for the Government to pick a fight with voters on nature.

Itโ€™s bad policy and bad politics.

Right, OK, Iโ€™d missed that bit. The site itself doesnโ€™t flood and itโ€™s not increasing the risk elsewhere - is that the conclusion?

Fewer than 1 in 10 people support Badenochโ€™s proposed 15-year wait on citizenship - British Future A new poll by Focaldata finds more than half the public (56%) think citizenship should be available after 5 years or less

We didn't have any attitudes on 15 year routes to citizenship
when Badenoch made her proposal - because Switzerland is the outlier at 10 years, everyone else 4-8 years

So I polled it a year ago

No attitudes data on 20, 25, 30 as nobody had ever thought of that

There is a remarkable process of elite radicalisation - based on a cartoonish caricature of the Great British Public

Opposition leader Kemi Badenoch writes to the Prime Minister to say that tripling and quadrupling settlement times to 15 and 20 years "are a good start but should go further"

Settlement taking that long are very niche positions among the public - British Social Attitudes - but popular among elites

Precisely! More than that, most Brits despise Trump, and will want Starmer to resist his bullying. By contrast, Farage and co will lose support tying themselves so sycophantically to Trump. Iโ€™d call this a win-win situation!

How AGI-is-nigh doomers own-goaled humanity The road to where we are now was (mostly) paved with good intentions โ€” but mixed with too much uncritical acceptance of hype.

Gary Marcus on why "Pause AI" and similar "Doomsday stories of AGI" are dangerous:

I'm reminded of a line from the late Colin McEvedy:

"A policy of all round aggression, however much it may influence people, wins few friends."

He was talking about 11th century Poland but Iran seems determined to follow the same path.

The easiest way to damage a narcissist like Trump? Ignore him. Show him indifference. Not hate or anger, just enable him to feel that thing he doesn't want to feel, that he is not important. Don't tell him, that defeats the object. Let him feel it.
