It sucks. It takes away what I think it a vital pathway to the spread of more equitable policies.
It sucks. It takes away what I think it a vital pathway to the spread of more equitable policies.
A few times lately I've paused before covering good policies that cities, events, etc have put into place, bc they've been instituted in a low key way w/ little fanfare. On one hand, others can learn from these policies. On the other, if the wrong ppl start caring they exist, they could vanish.
The latest Scouts headlines have me remembering editing this story only 4 yrs ago. Wild how quickly rights get rolled back the second sth is politicized. The previous policies weren't perfect, as this story outlined, but there was no public hand-wringing about them. xtramagazine.com/power/trans-...

Scriptโs managing editor @ziyajones.bsky.social breaks down how wait times have changed for gender-affirming surgeries with the recent budget cutsโand what this means for trans and non-binary Quebeckers seeking care.
โWhat would [it] mean, to be ready to defend ourselves [as trans women], especially as communities of disabled people, chronically ill people, of people whose bodies are constantly subjected to the criticism of being 'weak' or 'unfit?'โ @razorfemme.bsky.social's new column is now live at Script:
There is an epidemic of transgender violence spreading across the West. Today, a transgender school shooter murdered 9 innocent victims and injured 25 more in Tumbler Ridge, BC. My heart breaks for the victims, their families, and the community. But I canโt stop at condolences โ we need solutions. Look at the pattern: Aberdeen Rite Aid Facility in Maryland. Club Q in Colorado. Highlands Ranch School in Colorado. Annunciation Catholic School in Minnesota. Covenant School in Tennessee. Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia.
This epidemic of violence will continue until we change our societyโs response to transgender ideology. When people are a danger to themselves and others, the common sense solution is to treat their mental illness rather than affirm dangerous delusions. I encourage parents and teachers to help fight the transgender violence epidemic themselves โ since their government is obviously uninterested in doing so. This issue is entrenched at every level of our education and healthcare systems. If a minor in your care expresses a desire to transition their gender identity, help them. Offer compassion. Affirming delusions is neglect, not care. Our kids are perfect just the way they are. So tell them plainly: they donโt need to change their name or experiment with harmful drugs and surgeries to be loved.
At a time when the focus should be on a community in mourning, people like MLA Tara Armstrong are using a horrific tragedy to promote what boils down to conversion therapy. Nauseating.
A must-read today: "An entire community is mourning a horrific loss in Tumbler Ridge this week. And how it is being talked about online, and the dangerous links being made to trans people at large, will have resounding and dangerous impacts in the months and weeks to come."

As we all move through the grief that news out of BC is bringing, I hope that this info is not eclipsed by sensational coverage about the shooter's gender. Everything about this is heartbreaking.
As the search for work gets more desperate, queer and trans workers often see the worst sides of work. But they also come with brilliant solutions.

My first piece for the newly launched queer health magazine @scripthealth.bsky.social takes a look at post-nonmonogamy. So happy to have been invited to contribute. More to come!
Amazing! They vary based on the scope of the project but start at $350 for a q&a and $450 for a basic short reported story
I hope you'll follow us and read our work! And I don't have a limitless budget, but I'm always happy to hear from writers with exciting pitches! I'll eventually do a more targeted call for pitches, too.
Another really exciting aspect of the project is that it's billingual and all content will appear in English and French! Having lived in Quebec for more than a decade I'm looking forward to getting a chance to try to contribute at least a bit to dialogue between anglo and franco queer communities
It'll be serious when needed, but we believe there's room for irreverence when we talk about our bodies and what they need. We'll be talking about everything from aging to transition to disability to sex to substance use to HIV to healthcare policy and beyond. There's resilience in humour, I think.
We know that queer and trans people are too often dismissed, ignored or worse when trying to access healthcareโif they can get access at all. We want Script to serve as a by us and for us health resource to help people access the high quality info they need to take charge of their health.

A ripped apart copy of Alberta Bill 9.
Alberta just introduced Bill 9, which exists for one and only one purpose: deleting the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms as it pertains to trans kids, denying them the right to life and stripping their healthcare away.
This is cruel, anti-democratic and anti-constitutional.
