Successful evening walk. βοΈ
Lovely walk around Beddgelert today. ππ
β¦.spinosaurus via the museumβs collections. It has been really exciting to explore the natural world with the kids (and adults!) of Bolton, and I canβt wait to see what 2026 brings for this group of young nature enthusiasts. πππ¦
2025 saw the launch of the Young Naturalists Club at Bolton Museum and this week we held the final session of the year. Over 6 sessions since February we have had 649 attendees and have learnt about everything from birds to botany, and from spiders toβ¦.
Found this amazing π today! 20cm across, 21cm tall - wow! It must be protected at all costs. (Just by accident wearing the most appropriate shirt!)
β οΈ A friendly reminder β οΈ please share!
Fake spider webs can pose a real danger to autumn wildlife that can become trapped and unable to break free.
Help wildlife this Halloween by making sure your celebrations don't become frightful for nature.

Had a really great weekend this week, especially being out searching for and recording fungi yesterday. ππβπ«
Hey! No, not at all. With Bolton I have a bank of data from previous projects but over all Iβm interested in collecting sightings from across then UK if possible, for wider research.
Following on from my post yesterday: here is the fox seen in 1991, in comparison with a fox seen in my mumβs back garden in January 2024. Have you spotted a fox recently? Let me knowβ¦ FoxesBolton@hotmail.com
Going through the natural history archive at Bolton Museum today, I came across this snapshot of a fox spotted in 1991. Iβm keen to start recording at the museum again to ensure an accurate understanding of our local flora and fauna; the data we already have collected is invaluable!
Oh my god. Yesterday I went to see bat-eared foxes in person for the first time, and I donβt think I can ever get over it. π¦
Really enjoyed showing students from Sixth Form Bolton a selection of objects from the botany collection here at Bolton Museum today. They were using them as inspiration, and to explore observational drawing - a great use of the natural history collections!
What a privilege it is to a) get to work with these amazing animals, and b) get to share them, and the rest of the natural history collection at Bolton Library & Museum Services, with our visitorsβ¦ a real privilege every day. Join us tomorrow if you like foxes too / as much as I do! π¦
A great first day back at work after a holiday, with research requests coming in⦠it seems owls are the bird of the moment with our barn and tawny owls currently getting involved with very interesting studies. (A day late for this #TaxidermyTuesday!)
A nice and relaxing walk around Low Hall Nature Reserve earlier this week. πΏπ¦
Wow!
This is just wonderful. π»π₯°
A webcomic with two frames, the top frame has the text βloved in lifeβ with a mother and cub brown bear, with a yellow imposed image of a bears paw print on the heart of the bear. The second frame has the text βand in deathβ with our taxidermy brown bear showing yellow human hand prints imposed over it.
One of our summer placement students created a beautiful webcomic honouring one of the most popular of our touchable specimens in the Museum.

A great few days leading nature walks and crafting with nature - arguably, the best job in the world. π πΈ

A new species of sail-backed iguanodontian has been named from southern England by the ever-prolific @valdosaurus.bsky.social. Yet another to add to the growing list! #FossilFriday π¦π§ͺ

Had a lovely meal for our anniversary today. β€οΈ
A chough
A jackdaw
A rook
A crow
Here are some corvids I have photographed. The chough was the hardest to see, as youβd expect. See more on my instagram @ren.field.2
#TaxidermyTuesday - late as always! But itβs been a busy week of talking about birds, and Young Naturalist Clubs. At the start of the week (well, Saturday) I enjoyed a day in the Nature Gallery talking to visitors about corvids and how we identify the different crows... with help from this raven!
A great day today at Smithills Hall for a nature walk - lots of leaves identified and lots of insects spotted. And the perfect weather again, very lucky! πΏππͺ°βοΈ
For #TaxidermyTuesday today, a closer look at this barn owl. Did you know, barn owls have a specialised serrated edge on the underside of their middle toe! Possibly a grooming adaptation, acting basically like a comb.π¦
