🌌 What does our Milky Way look like from the outside? πŸŒ€ How has that changed over time? ✨ Why did my coauthors let me use the phrase β€œchild movie star” in an actual paper? ⚑️

Check out arxiv.org/abs/2507.17637, and the incredible work by Imig et al in arxiv.org/abs/2507.17629 to find out!

Things are bad and scary now, but if it helps to remember that there are beautiful places in the world, here are a couple photos from northern Nevada last week.

I got one rejection like 2 months ago, and one yesterday. Sometimes the results come at quite different times from different panels/topics. I would have thought my two went to the same panel, but πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Yeah sex is great but have you ever made a spreadsheet to organize a group for a thing and everyone filled it out correctly?

No seriously, have you? What’s it like? I bet it’s awesome.

You might feel like *your* job has no real impact, but have you thought about the poor person who adds that β€œremember this device for next time” button to login pages?

My comfiest socks are purple REI wool midweights I accidentally stole on a flight to Europe, because they looked like mine under the seat. (It was a flight from SLC, so like 85% of the plane was wearing REI socks.) I don’t know how the previous owner made them so soft, but my life is better for it.

Also, the new statement has major grammatical errors in it, which I KNOW is not the most important thing now, but COME ON

Discovered this week that our dept’s mission statement was changed to remove Now Banned Words, without telling anyone. Our mission statement. Of our values. Voted on by faculty (itself a feat). Without telling us. 🫠🫠🫠

I have an activity on HR Diagram, similar to what someone else suggested, where they plot the nearest and the brightest stars, and infer things about stellar type frequency. Also one on variable stars β€” eyeball a light curve to estimate P and mean mag, and calc a distance. Lmk and I can dig them up!

"First of all, some of the things here I say will be incorrect" is the new cold opener for every colloquium talk I give from now on.

There should be a rule that if you build a new house, especially if it’s odd/interesting, all the neighbors who watched it go up can come see what the inside looks like when it’s done.

The β€œdate her harder” meme, with a woman labeled β€œthe government now, apparently” saying to stop doing DEIA, and a man labeled β€œscientists” replying that they’ll do DEIA even harder.

I realize this is, like, #2886447 on the list of imminent Bad Things, but I just remembered the US’s 250th birthday is within the next 4 years, and ugh that’s gonna suck.
