Ofc bleeding-edge work assumes imperfect comp in a lot of cases (most?)
I am talking purely pedagogically tbc. Sketching out a model that starts from economies of scale in monopolistic competition and then points out how firm number determines benefits from trade is far more intuitive than sketching out a Ricardian model.
International trade appears the one field where models that specify imperfectly competitive markets are much more natural to the intuition than those that assume perfect competition as a matter of fact.
Of course, as Plokhy points out, prior to the Nineteenth century, both the terms "Rossiya" and "Rus'" designated not the territorial bounds of the Muscovite state, but respectively "Ruthenia" and "the ecclesiarchial inheritance of the Kyivan Metropolitanate". A much more nebulous space.
Speaks to the complicated prehistory of Ukrainian national development, which was never pristine and untroubled. In fact, much of the "Cossack identity" around which Ukrainophilia was grounded was constructed through attempts to be co-opted into All-Russian nobiliary estates.
The Southern Decembrist vision of Europe, not so happy for non-Great Russians still nationalizing, but certainly brilliant for Polish patriots.

Again, quite extraordinary to see how many commentators and analysts still can't get their heads around the possibility that the IRGC might lose.
Perhaps mythmaking was the Iranian regime's most effective capability.
I'm somewhat skeptical of the idea of majoritarian domestic popularity, most of the polling (caveat that independent polling in Iran is hard) seems to indicate that best case scenario he has plurality support for transition, and much of the popularity is generated from name rec.
Tbc I agree that within diaspora communities the intensity of monarchists gives them a structural advantage over like people who just create obscure Georgetown affiliated liberal dissident groups like the free scholars...but just that this is also not good from perspective of potential transition
Yes, it isnt as simple as no one on the ground wanting the Shah. There's pretty clearly a substantial portion of Iranian politics that would be ok with it, but it is also exactly that portion outside the regime's support base that would be non-conducive to liberal democracy.
I think its fair to say that there's a substantial part of the opposition, both diaspora and domestic, that desires Pahlavi rule. Mostly conservative sectors of Iranian society nostalgic for the stability of pre-IRI politics. But they're not the majority, and besides Pahlavi is very polarizing.
As far as evil treasonous cults go you have to admit the MeK has a very unique aesthetic tbh.
Explaining to people that the Shah is not an epic chungus liberal democrat but a guy surrounded by an inner circle which spends all its time on social media calling any non monarchist dissidents communist saboteurs
The focus is primarily post-Romanov assumption to the late imperial-period. It takes a conceptual view of the entire matter so there's a lots of bits and parts that focus on how imperialism under the Empire actually worked over time as opposed to an in-depth focus on any one particular relation.
Tbc this is a history course so this is Russia's Empire as in the history of the Tsardom's relations with its peripheries.
Got the syllabus on Russia's Empire I asked for from the (very nice) professor. Reading up on Russian imperialism pre-Soviet era and its remarkably interesting.
