free.99's whole catalog is amazing, i've yet to work through it all
free.99's whole catalog is amazing, i've yet to work through it all
alright i'm logging off again y'all have fun now
I HAD NOT SEEN THIS ONE YET
these flashes are so cool. it's still always magic to me when you distort shit beyond recognition but can still see and feel the depth and the contours of the frame
anyway marathon is sick, i love it to bits. i'd just super encourage people to follow the threads. even purely selfishly: if you love marathon, you're loving all this art it's drawing inspiration from, and you deserve to have a connection to those things too
and this is a very incomplete list, it's drawing from techwear and '60s corporate typesetting and 300 other things that have been repeatedly infused with new life in various scenes, i'm not an authority on any of this -
Looking for help covering some extra costs for my bottom surgery this July! If you can give anything at all, it would make a huge difference for me! Please share if you can as well!

tangential, but just re: tracing aesthetics through history, they're obviously pulling from protest art + mixed media
i have a backburnered project that led me to this book on photocopier history
sickest cover i've ever seen btw
it's short-ish, academic, thoroughly researched, great stuff
zoรซ wolfe is also constantly doing really sick-looking work (she actually contributed to a different seg of that fight club wave too!)
has also been on my shortlist of people i'd wanna work with if i ever had a sufficiently-moneyed project for *years*
some other shit i think is rad is this wave remix of fight club

the commercial art that ushers aesthetics into the mainstream should always act as a gateway, not a dead-end.
It's more profitable to capture an audience by leveraging scale to quietly act like you're the only game in town. It's incentivized! it's worse for everyone though.
marathon owes royalties to every trans artist and musician for cultivating and keeping the glitch digital psychosis artistic framing alive
also i gotta say the mastering on "one" specifically is *incredible*
I have nothing but praise for the execution of that game, but "new for a shooter" doesn't mean new!
Take this as a chance to dig into actual glitch stuff!!!
If the Marathon soundtrack is your first introduction to that *sound*, you should be listening to shit like this
xfree99x.bandcamp.com/track/one
performance capture cleanup is an incredibly thankless art
people are amazing, eh?
not to mention the gorgeous matte paintings [first image is the final shot, second 2 images are source paintings, from this artstation]

happy to take this down if this isn't meant to spread, but I also found some WIPs, including fx work
seriously, every team member, firing on all cylinders
In your defense, failing to credit animators is also standard practice for projects like this haha
I assumed mocap was part of the pipeline because the handheld feel is such a strong part of the short's aesthetic, and that's standard practice for projects like this. Learning it was all hand-keyed is just icing!
Not true? This is one of the only pieces of game marketing I've ever seen include a full credits sequence!
youtu.be/fvbEnWLRo1s?...
all the shots??? every one???
the *weight* of every single person in this short is so exceptionally well-sold, especially when characters are *shot*, i just. assumed. like a moron. wow
I'm fucking sorry- this whole cinematic was hand-keyed? The whole thing? What?
it's free until monday!!
the world's so widely-inspired and cohesive, almost every match has something remarkable happen, the pacing is well-tuned
"the pvp is too infrequent" no they made the correct call almost every time and everyone in the steam forums is wrong, sorry, this is some of the best shit ever done
yeah man i'm just kind of Buzzing about this game in a way i haven't for almost any game in ages
it is so refreshing to play a game that has a real, deeply-held opinion about itself
like. 'opinion' is almost too light, the game has conviction about what it's doing
i've always bounced off the stress of extraction shooters, thought it wasn't for me, but the curiosity about the narrative/world reeled me in long enough to 'get it', and by the end of my session i really cared about my loadout.
this game made me a worse person in a few hours and i'm in love
i'm not into extraction shooters at all, and marathon completely won me over. fucking incredible. hope they don't rebalance too much.
the onboarding flow is really rough tho, just know that Contracts are the most important thing you need to pay attention to. do not ignore the Contracts tab.
marathon might be the first new video game in 10 years
i was kidding
