ExxonMobil Lobbyist Caught Hacking Climate Activists The Department of Justice is investigating a lobbying firm representing ExxonMobil for hacking the phones of climate activists: The hacking was allegedly commissioned by a Washington, D.C., lobbying firm, according to a lawyer representing the U.S. government. The firm, in turn, was allegedly working on behalf of one of the world's largest oil and gas companies, based in Texas, that wanted to discredit groups and individuals involved in climate litigation, according to the lawyer for the U.S.

Behind the scenes, the company was also quietly dismantling a system to prevent the spread of misinformation. When the company announced on Jan. 7 that it would end its fact-checking partnerships, the company also instructed teams responsible for ranking content in the company’s apps to stop penalizing misinformation, according to sources and an internal document obtained by Platformer.

The result is that the sort of viral hoaxes that ran roughshod over the platform during the 2016 US presidential election — “Pope Francis endorses Trump,” Pizzagate, and all the rest — are now just as eligible for free amplification on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads as true stories.

This is an excellent thread from @profaliceroberts.bsky.social about the mishandling of the COVID pandemic, by the Boris Johnson government, and I highly commend it.

However, this mistaken thinking, is also at the centre of the climate and ecological crisis, and it has the same causes.

It is entirely logical to be furious at the fossil fuel industry, whose decades-long campaign of corrupting politicians, crafting fake science, sowing false doubt, and lying at an industrial scale has brought us to this moment. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/10/o...

A purple graphic with the European Commissionlogo and the text "DIGITAL SERVICES ACT" in large white letters. Below that, it reads "Formal proceedings opened against TikTok on election risks." There are seven yellow stars arranged in a circle around the text.
